Could This $1.5M Sale Spark a 2024 Online Auction Boom?

PLUS: The Seinfeld Mystery Deepens...🔎

The Daily Vroom

Hello Vroomers! 👋

Hope you're all doing great! Just a quick update from yesterday – I shared a link to the BaT awards that was active at the time, but later, it seems to have hit a glitch. It happens! No worries, though. Here's the updated link to the BaT award results. Trust me, it's a really interesting read. Enjoy!

MARKET LEADERBOARD

💰 The figures shared below don’t count any other sales such as car seats, memorabilia etc.. All online auction sites are analyzed to put this leaderboard together.

I only include websites that have sold 5+ cars in the chart below. Which means PCarMarket and many others did not sell 5 cars yesterday!

Yesterday marked a banner day in overall sales, hitting a whopping $6.4 million – the highest since New Year's. The sell-through rate was notably strong, and Hagerty stood out with a perfect 100%, thanks to their no-reserve auction strategy. This was part of a collection they listed, with the top sale fetching $14k. Looking ahead, there's buzz around the 3K-MILE 2014 FERRARI LAFERRARI auction on PcarMarket. It's already at $2.5 million, a significant bid for that site and a testament to their growing presence in the market.

YESTERDAY’S TOP 5 SALES

Alright, let's dive into yesterday's top sales. Just click on the image, and boom, you're right at the listing.

2021 Ford GT Carbon Series $1,050,000

1958 Porsche 356A 1600S Cabriolet w/Hardtop $292,000

2004 Lamborghini Murcielago - $286,500

2017 Holden HSV Gtsr W1 $235,000

1993 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R $211,00

Sales Of The Day

Today I wanna highlight two very different cars that sold yesterday.

First up is this 2021 McLaren GT that sold for $151,000 yesterday on Cars & Bids. And get this, It was right under my nose here in Los Angeles! 🌮 Talk about a near-miss opportunity, huh? 😅

Now, let's talk details. This McLaren GT stands out with just about 3,000 miles on the clock. Equipped with a 612-hp twin-turbo V8 and the Lightweight Sport Pack, it's a pure, unaltered piece of McLaren engineering.

Here's where it gets interesting: Cars & Bids hasn't exactly been the go-to for McLarens, with a previous sell-through rate for the brand hovering around a low 39%. That's notably below their overall insanely consistent high sell-through rate. But this sale? It might just be turning the tide. Selling a car like this McLaren GT not only shakes off some past stats but could signal a shift in buyer confidence, especially for high-end cars on their platform of which they’ve sold many.

The sale itself is a win-win – great deal for both parties involved. I’m expecting to see more of these type of sales in 2024.

Next up we have the 1958 Porsche 356A 1600S Cabriolet with Hardtop that just went for an impressive $292,000 on BaT. This isn't its first appearance; the car didn't sell at $271k three years ago. This round, the seller got smart, bringing in 1600veloce, a top-notch BaT seller known for presenting vehicles in their best possible light. It's always a good move to bring in the pros, especially someone with a reputation like 1600veloce.

Quick fact: 1600veloce won the 2022 award for photo gallery of the year award which can be seen here.

The car's Ruby Red exterior and beige leather interior, along with its black removable hardtop, exemplify classic Porsche elegance. The winning combination of visual appeal and engineering is a testament to Porsche's time-honored design and performance.

This sale is more than just about the car; it's a clear sign of a strong market. Even a vehicle that stumbled in a previous auction can hit it big with the right selling strategy.

The Seinfeld Mystery Continues

The mystery surrounding Jerry Seinfeld's recent Porsche auction deepens. While the stunning 1996 Targa captured headlines, I noticed a curious trend: this wasn't a one-off event.

Over the past few months, the same LLC linked to Seinfeld has discreetly sold two other high-value Porsches – a gleaming 1988 Turbo Cabriolet (pictured above) for $270,000 and a classic 1989 Speedster (pictured below) for $238,000.

Are these silent auctions part of a larger collection purge, or simply unrelated sales? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure – Jerry's passion for Porsches remains as vibrant as ever, even if the spotlight on their departures is dimmed.

My hunch is that if these cars belonged to Seinfeld, he likely chose not to promote them as his own for some reason. We've seen earlier this week how attaching a superstar's name, like Michael Jordan's, can lead to remarkable results. This was evident in the extraordinary sale of his 1991 BMW 850i 6-Speed.

The Changing Face Of Online Auctions

Did you catch that? A 2021 Ford GT Carbon Series just went under the digital hammer for $1,050,000 on Bring a Trailer. And guess what? This isn't a one-off event. We've seen similar models fetch around $975k previously. The trend is crystal clear – the market for high-end cars is not just robust; it's skyrocketing.

But here's the real juicy part: there's chatter about a new platform brewing, and these folks are deep into supercars.(hint
) We're talking about a digital auction house created by and for supercar enthusiasts. This could seriously shake things up. Imagine a place where the love for cars drives the experience – a platform that gets what a supercar heartbeat really sounds like. More choices for both sellers and buyers, and a platform that's pulsing with the supercar rhythm.

Now, let's talk big picture. Online platforms like Bring a Trailer are knocking the traditional snobbery of car auctions right out of the park. These platforms are proving you don't need a black-tie event to sell a dream car. They're offering efficiency, broader reach, and those sweet, low fees. We're talking about a $5k or even $10k fee on a million-dollar sale – that's unheard of in traditional auction houses! We’ve even got the niche (but excellent) platform PCarMarket with a live bid of $2.5m.

The big names in the auction world – Barrett-Jackson, Sotheby's, Bonhams – they're all wading into the online waters. But it's more than just shifting from physical to digital; it's about capturing the essence of what makes these online auctions so appealing. It's a whole new ballgame, and they're still warming up.

And here's something to rev your engines: It's just a matter of time before we see a car breaking the $10 million mark in an online sale. That's not just speculation; it's the trajectory we're on. As these platforms grow and evolve, the sky's the limit for what they can achieve.

What does this mean for us car enthusiasts? Exciting times ahead! The digital auction world is not just changing; it's evolving at full throttle. High-value sales are becoming the norm, and with new platforms joining the race, we're in for an adrenaline-filled ride. The potential for growth in this sector is immense, and I can't wait to see how it reshapes the landscape of car collecting and trading. We're on the cusp of a new era where accessibility meets luxury, and the thrill of the hunt for that perfect car becomes more exhilarating and accessible than ever before.

Will the future see a significant increase in high-end car sales online?
