$180M Sales In April Says the Market’s Just Fine

PLUS: A $143K R8 steal, $1M+ winners, and which cars took a loss on the comeback..

The Daily Vroom

Good morning Vroomers,

April’s been anything but stable — tariffs, stock market swings, and constant economic chatter. And yet, it’s also been the strongest month of the year for million-dollar online sales.

That disconnect is telling.

From speaking to a few contacts running live auctions, there’s a clear theme: the top end of the market isn’t flinching. It’s the lower and mid-tier stuff that’s bouncing around — where seller expectations often outpace reality. The true volatility right now? It’s under six figures.

But in the online world, the numbers don’t lie. Roughly $180M in vehicle sales closed out April — up from $170M in March. For context, that’s nearly $10M stronger than April 2024 — a clear sign that, despite the noise, buyers are still showing up for the right cars at the right time.

And nowhere was that clearer than in the eight separate $1M+ sales this month — a mix of halo Porsches, modern exotics, and a timeless 300SL.

Alumni Sales

Yesterday, a handful of alumni returned to BaT for round two. The chart below shows what they sold for this time vs. what they fetched last time — with arrows showing whether the price moved up or down.

It’s not a market-wide trend (we’d need a much larger dataset for that), but it does offer some early signals. Some sellers are getting rewarded for timing things right. Others? Not so much.

Still, this kind of re-run insight is a useful tool — especially if you’re tracking specific makes or watching for patterns in flipping, hold times, or even platform strength.

YESTERDAY’S TOP 5 SALES

With the Senna top of the pile, timing is everything with these bigger sales - today is 31 years since the legendary racing driver Ayrton Senna died.

2019 McLaren Senna $1,190,000

2017 Ford GT $800,000

1998 Porsche 911 Carrera S Coupe $207,000

1988 Porsche 911 Turbo Targa $188,000

Sale of the Day

This was a textbook sniper win. A clean, low-mileage Gen 2 R8 with the Express Red interior and all the right factory options—sold well below recent comps.

  • Seller had it listed on their own site for $155K.

  • SBX failed to move a similar one in February at $142K.

  • Across the board, other recent R8s with similar mileage and spec have traded higher.

So what happened here?

Hard to say for sure—but sometimes auctions just fall through the cracks. The car was sharp. The market was there. And the seller decided to move on.

And the buyer?
They basically got a Lamborghini Huracán-lite with quattro grip, supercar looks, and one of the best-sounding V10s ever made.

That’s not just a great buy. That’s a win.
