The $550,000 Ford Focus RS Up For Auction

PLUS: Comparing sales data & revenue for Cars & Bids

The Daily Vroom

Good morning, Vroomers,

Yesterday, we kicked things off with a charity auction, and today we’re keeping that theme going with a car I’ve never spotlighted in The Daily Vroom—a ride that began its journey in a charity auction.

Enjoy the read, and I’ll catch you tomorrow.

I only include websites that have sold 5+ vehicles in the chart below.

Cars & Bids Sales Comparison

So yesterday we were talking about how Mr. Consistency aka Cars & Bids how they continue to be extremely consistent in selling 20-25 vehicles a day and list on average around 30, which is no small feat. That being said if it was a mom & pop operation they'd be ecstatic. But here we're talking about a company that was sold to a Private Equity company called the Chernin group who are one of the best around. They didn't buy C&B to be 2nd they want to win and win big & rightly so.

So I decided to roll up my sleeves and dig into the numbers a bit. I picked a juicy slice of their sales data - May, June, and July - and compared 2023 to 2024. Now, I know what you're thinking - "It's just a quarter!" And you're right, we can't write the whole story from this, but it's enough to get our gears turning about where Cars & Bids is headed.

First up, let's talk volume. Boom! They've moved more metal in this period compared to last year - we're talking just over 50 more cars finding new homes. Not too shabby, eh?

Next up I wanted to see what was their total volume of sales in dollars. As you can see below even though they sold more cars during this period in 2024, there is a significant drop (circa $4m) of sales from 2023 to 2024.

Let’s dive into the cars in just a moment. First, I wanted to check if the dip in total sales dollars in 2024 impacted the revenue stream. Interestingly, they pulled in more revenue this May and July compared to last year, but it’s June where things took a turn—revenue was significantly stronger in June 2023.

So I wanted to find out what was the price segment that had the most significant impact on revenue. I first looked at where the highest revenues could be earned ($4,500 is their max revenue).

Key Findings:

  1. High-Value Transactions (>$100K):

    • 2023: 44 vehicles

    • 2024: 39 vehicles (decrease)

  2. Near-Maximum Transactions ($90K-$100K):

    • 2023: 26 vehicles

    • 2024: 12 vehicles (significant decrease)

Insights:

  • Decrease in High-Value Sales: The number of vehicles sold above $100K decreased slightly from 2023 to 2024, which could be a contributing factor to the lower overall revenue.

  • Significant Drop in Near-Maximum Sales: There was a notable reduction in the number of vehicles sold in the $90K-$100K range in 2024. Since these transactions are close to reaching the maximum buyer's fee, this drop likely had a substantial impact on revenue.

Here you can see the revenue differences in all the segments. The only segment where they made more revenue in 2024 was in the <$10k.

Now, let’s check out the vehicles driving those revenues. The big hit in 2024 came from a sharp decline in Rivian R1S sales—it was a hot seller in 2023, but not so much this year. On the flip side, the one model that saw a significant revenue boost in 2024 compared to 2023 was the 911.

II could go deeper, but I’m mindful that this is meant to be a quick read, so I won’t take up too much of your time. In short, Cars & Bids, like all platforms, faces some challenges ahead. If they’re aiming for real growth, significant changes will be necessary. Let’s not forget, they made some big moves a few months back, including letting go of a lot of their team and even the CEO. How they choose to grow from here is a topic for another day…

Charity Auction Darling: One-of-One 2016 Ford Focus RS Hits the Block

This isn't usually my wheelhouse - I've never covered a Ford Focus here on The Daily Vroom. But this 2016 Focus RS is special.

It started its life being auctioned off for charity, where it fetched an astounding $550,000 winning bid! The original buyer was able to spec it in any color from Ford's catalog, and they chose this Magnetic Metallic (probably not the choice I would make!) - making this the only US-market Focus RS finished in this rare hue.

After that charity auction, the car made an appearance at Barrett-Jackson in 2019, where it sold for a more reasonable (but still impressive) $46,200. Now it's back on the market, with just 71 miles on the clock. This pristine hot hatch is equipped with the desirable RS2 package, Brembo brakes, and a slick 6-speed manual transmission.

Sure, the Focus RS may not be the first car that comes to mind as a blue-chip collector's item. But this one-of-one example, with its incredible provenance and exceptional condition, definitely deserves our attention. With no reserve, it will be fascinating to see how high the bidding goes on this unique piece of Ford performance history. If you’re after a Focus RS, this may just be the one RS to own.
