80's Nostalgia With This Awesome Celica Supra

PLUS: Was this 2024 Porsche 718 Spyder RS Weissach a bargain?

The Daily Vroom

Hey Vroomers!

It's 11:30 PM, and I'm staring at a blank screen. No plan, no prep, just me and a sea of open tabs tracking auctions. Life decided to play bumper cars with my schedule, so here we are.

Could I skip a day? Sure. No boss breathing down my neck, no sponsors to please. But I made a deal with myself to never miss an edition, and so far, I've kept it, just. (If only I could make the same deal with the gym or my sweet tooth!)

Why am I telling you this? Part procrastination, part self-motivation. If I start typing, I've gotta finish, right?

Anyway, enough of my mental pit stop. Let's hope the content below is worth the wait. I'm as curious as you are!

See you Monday, Sam

P.S. Haven't done a ‘P.S.’ in 30+ years. Like what you read (or don't)? Drop me a line!

YESTERDAY’S TOP 5 SALES

Well, Vroomers, yesterday's top 5 were quite the spectacle - each from a different era and, interestingly, from three different websites. It's like a multi-venue, time-traveling car show.

Let's talk about that 2024 Porsche 718 Spyder RS Weissach. The buyer, robbscars, had previously offered $75k over MSRP to a dealer on a similar car and still missed out. But patience proved its worth - he ended up with this beauty, which he actually prefers. A perfect example of good things coming to those who wait.

What's more, robbscars hadn't made any purchases on BaT all year, then suddenly acquired not just this Porsche, but a '96 Harley as well. Would love to garner a look in his garage!

We can't overlook the sale of the 2014 Porsche 911 50th Anniversary Edition with a mere 1k miles in 10 years. The new owner's philosophy is spot on: "It will most certainly be driven! IMHO - That is what they're made for." Couldn't agree more - cars are meant for driving, not just admiring.

Want to dive deeper into any of these listings? Just click on the car to take you directly to the listing. Trust me, some of these are worth a closer look.

2024 Porsche 718 Spyder RS Weissach $256,000

1991 Land Rover Defender 110 by Ecd $210,000

2014 Porsche 911 50th Anniversary Edition 7-Speed $204,000

2000 BMW Z8 $184,200

1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL $157,500

Alumni Listings

Vroomers, let's chat about BaT's Alumni Listings for a sec. These listings are like a crystal ball for the classic car market, giving us a sneak peek at how specific models' values dance over time. It's fascinating stuff, really.

Take that Launch Edition Rivian, for instance. Now, I personally think it's a great truck, but let's face it - prices have taken quite a nosedive in the past year, and they're likely to keep sliding. Still, the buyer's getting a sweet, lightning-fast ride, so there's that.

Now, here's something interesting about yesterday's Alumni listings - a good chunk of them weren't those fancy, high-priced showstoppers. We're talking 'regular' secondhand cars and even bikes. This is where the volume's at for many auction houses, BaT included. Get this - 13% of their sales yesterday were for cars under $10k, many of them pretty unremarkable.

It's a bit of a head-scratcher, especially for folks who've had their "unremarkable" cars turned away by BaT. Don't get me wrong, sub-$10k can definitely be remarkable, but some of these... well, let's just say they're not exactly turning heads.

This begs the question - what exactly are BaT's criteria for accepting vehicles? If anyone's got the inside scoop, I'm all ears. It's a bit of a mystery, and I love a good mystery... especially when it involves cars.

Potential Deal of the Day: 1984 Toyota Celica Supra P Type

Here’s the scoop on what could be the coolest find of the day: the 1984 Toyota Celica Supra P Type. Why is this car so friggin' cool? Let me break it down for you. (you have to check out those pics which are 💪 )

Why This Supra Stands Out

First off, this isn’t just any old car—it's a piece of 80s automotive excellence. The Supra P Type is a symbol of an era when Toyota was perfecting the art of making reliable, fun-to-drive sports cars. This particular model is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission and a 2.8L I6 engine. That means you get to enjoy the thrill of shifting gears yourself and experiencing the raw power of an inline-six engine. It's pure, unfiltered driving joy.

Recent Repaint and Condition

This beauty has recently been treated to a fresh repaint in its original brown and mahogany colors, complemented by a maroon interior. What’s even more impressive? It's completely unmodified. Finding a Supra that hasn't been tampered with is like stumbling upon a hidden treasure. This car offers the authentic driving experience Toyota intended, which is rare and highly sought after.

The Sweet Spot

Let’s talk about the clean Carfax report—no accidents and no mileage discrepancies. This Supra has spent most of its life in the dry, rust-free climates of Texas and California, which is a big deal for a car that's almost 40 years old. Plus, it's been mostly under private ownership, which means it’s been well cared for.

Street Cred and Nostalgia

This Supra is the epitome of 80s street cred. It’s got the classic, boxy styling that screams vintage cool. The pop-up headlights, the aggressive stance, and the unmistakable two-tone paint job are all hallmarks of an era when cars had personality and flair. Driving this car isn't just about getting from point A to B; it's about making a statement.

For those who grew up in the 80s or have a soft spot for that decade, this Supra is a trip down memory lane. It’s like having your own personal "Hangin' Tough" moment every time you get behind the wheel. And yes, that’s my random New Kids on the Block reference, but you get the idea!

The car turns heads, sparks conversations, and brings back memories of a time when things were just plain cool. The fact that it’s unmodified and well-preserved makes it even more special. You’re not just buying a car; you’re buying a piece of history.

The Final Lap

With a current high bid (at 1am) of $6,325 and the auction ending soon, this could be the steal of the day. Whether you’re a nostalgic enthusiast looking to relive the golden era of Japanese sports cars or a new collector hunting for a reliable classic, this 1984 Toyota Celica Supra P Type ticks all the boxes.

SBX - The CyberTruck Kings

The recent sale of a Cybertruck Cyberbeast, wrapped in matte black PPF, by SBX Cars for $143,000 has caught my attention. This transaction highlights several interesting points:

  1. SBX Cars appears to have a particular knack for selling CyberTrucks.

  2. However, their success seems largely limited to this specific model, at least for the time being.

  3. The seller, George Saliba (credit to James M. for this information), is known as a 'social media' car dealer. He strategically purchased a fleet of CyberTrucks during their peak demand, initially reaping significant profits from flipping them. However, the market has since cooled, reducing the profit margins.

Interestingly, Tesla had included a clause in their initial contracts stating that flipping the Cybertruck would result in a $50,000 fine. Now, months later, with numerous Cybertrucks having been flipped without apparent consequences, we can retrospectively view this as a clever "Marketing 101" tactic. The threat of the fine generated buzz and got people talking about the vehicle, creating additional hype and demand.

Saliba still has a considerable inventory of CyberTrucks. If he found the $143,000 price point satisfactory (though we can't confirm this), we may see more listings from him on SBX Cars in the near future.

This situation illustrates how manufacturers like Tesla can use contractual clauses and market scarcity not just as business practices, but as powerful marketing tools to drive interest and discussion around their products.
