BaT 2024 Sales Analyzed

🚗 PLUS: Three high mileage Audi Avant Wagons dissected

The Daily Vroom

Good morning, Vroomers,

I appreciate all the daily feedback, please keep it coming. If you have any questions, suggestions or anything, feel free to email me [email protected]

MARKET LEADERBOARD

💰 The figures shared below don’t count any other sales such as car seats, memorabilia etc… All online auction sites are analyzed to put this leaderboard together.

I only include websites that have sold 5+ cars in the chart below. Which means Hagerty, Hemmings and many others did not sell 5 vehicles yesterday!

Yesterday saw a decrease in overall sales, yet the market still managed an impressive $5.8 million in vehicle transactions. As I suggested at the start of the week, platforms like Hagerty and Hemmings simply lack the inventory to compete on our market leaderboard. Notably, Bring a Trailer experienced an unprecedented 36 Reserve Not Met (RNM) events yesterday, marking their highest this year. Among these, a notable listing was a 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170, which received a bid of $157,000 against its $123k MSRP, despite having only 19 miles on the odometer. It's puzzling why the seller would decline such an offer, especially since the car doesn't seem to be kept for driving. It's likely that, in scenarios like this, sellers have a fixed price in mind and are unwilling to compromise, even when it might not be the most logical choice.

What do you think. Should the seller have sold it for $157,000?

Bring a Trailer This Year

Following our mini deep dive into Cars & Bids 2024 sales showcased yesterday, I received numerous requests for a similar exploration of BaT. So, here it is, delivered with a smile! 😀

For those of you keeping a close eye on the market, it won't come as a shock to learn that Porsche leads the pack in terms of cars sold. As illustrated below, the 911 reigns supreme, outselling the combined total of the second and third most popular models. Interestingly, I hadn't anticipated Corvettes being such a sought-after commodity on BaT.

Presented below is an insightful chart showcasing the sales distribution across the week for the top 5 models in January and February. By examining the data this way, you can observe peculiar trends, such as the F-Series, for some reason, having its highest sales on Thursdays. Armed with this level of detail for all makes and models, you'd find yourself in a significantly advantageous position for buying or selling.

BaT serves the entire market, featuring cars sold from as far back as the 1920s right up to the present day, where flipping cars has become quite common. It appears that the years 2004-2008 represent the peak sales period so far this year.

Auctions To Watch

I do love Defender 90s. THIS... however is not just a Defender 90 but THE Defender 90 that has occupied Doug DeMuro's personal garage and that has been his trusted companion for many of his key life events. Own a rare piece of collector car auction history.

Sometimes, saying less is more. This is just a fine-looking car. As of right now the bids haven’t been flowing, lets see what the last few hours bring.

Pick your poison - Three high mileage Audi Avant wagons with 6-speed manual

This modified wagon is an Audi Allroad that has been prepped and sorted for sale with a number of interesting and very tasteful modifications. This twin turbocharged V6 has been modified with an RS4 clutch assembly, RS6 Spec turbos and engine management software, paired with a boost controller that lets you dial in the power based upon your mood, or road conditions.

It isn't quite the V10 beast of an RS6 that my cousin used to own in Paris, but those are truly unobtanium on these shores. The metallic green with green and gray leather is not for everyone, but I really like the way it looks on this car. It comes with spares and accessories for all seasons including a roof rack with bike racks, ski/snowboard carriers, kayak mounts and twin gas and water tanks as well as a hitch receiver.

This car has just over 200K miles but the problematic air suspension has been converted to a coil spring setup, recent timing belt change is documented and catalytic converters are removed, so some states may need to consider inspection requirements. With no reserve, this is set to sell and at current bargain bids I may even be bidding myself.

If the modified V6 above isn't refined enough for you, this version is a true S6 wagon - already super rare. How many other V8 manual wagons can you think of?

It was retrofitted, but doesn't seem any less awesome as a result. The V8 provides ample power and lots of documented service to most major wear items. It seems that the seller is a respected Audi mechanic and that he kept this well maintained as his personal car. The colors are more traditional, the layout is pretty unique but I am still partial to the Allroad ruggedness of the modified car above.

Either way, both are offered at no reserve so both will go to new owners this week.

Going back a bit further, this RS2 Avant is the holy grail of Audi Avants. Only 2,900 of these were built during a 16 month period in 1994 and 1995. It has the equivalent of 180K miles, so it has been driven, but the powertrain and suspension are said to have been reworked. And what a powertrain it is... Audi and Porsche co-developed this special model. Despite its bright blue color (looks like a solid repaint) this car can blend with the crowd, except to those who recognize the Porsche Cup Rims and rarity of this unique model's build.

There you have it. Three pretty spectacular manual wagons all for sale in the same week. I want to bring all three of them home, which one do you want?
