MARKET LEADERBOARD
Let's take a peek at yesterday's sales numbers & sell-through rates for the top auction websites.
I'm committed to providing comprehensive coverage of online auction sites for you. While it's tempting to focus on the industry giants, I strive for a balanced view.
Yesterday, BaT couldn't top their prior day's sales of 102 vehicles but still managed a commendable 86 sales. Notably, only 5 of these were priced above $100K. Contrary to popular belief, BaT doesn't exclusively deal in luxury cars. As highlighted in yesterday's post, their core market revolves around more modestly priced vehicles, with their average sale price yesterday standing at $37,000.
With the end of the another week, I have still yet to see any other auction platform consistently appear on the market leaderboard. The above four platforms are standing shoulders above the rest. Who’s going to break their dominance?
TOP 3 SALES OF THE DAY
AFFORDABLE EXCELLENCE
In the vast universe of the automotive industry, where luxury behemoths often steal the limelight, today I’m focusing on a segment that deserves its own standing ovation: models exclusively priced under $50,000 from sales this month.
🌟 Why the Spotlight on Affordable Cars? 🌟
These vehicles aren't just economical choices; they're the heart and soul of the online auction world, serving as the bread and butter of many platforms. They're testament to the fact that innovation, style, and performance don't always come with a hefty price tag.
🔍 Featuring Four Fantastic Finds 🔍
Among the myriad of choices, four models stand out:
MX-5 Miata: A symbol of sporty agility.
Cayenne: Combining luxury and versatility.
Fiat 500: Iconic, compact, and filled with character.
Classic Mini: A timeless blend of history and innovation.
Let’s delve into these affordable marvels, celebrating vehicles that offer both value and vogue. After all, why splurge when you can savor style and savings in one package? 🎉🚘
In this Heatmap you can see which platforms sell which of the models. Miata is my favorite, followed by the Fiat 500.
Now we know what the models are and which platform are selling them, let’s look at the actual cars that have been sold.
The "Classic Mini" produced over the years has remained relatively consistent in terms of its iconic compact design and engineering principles. However, as the brand passed through different parent companies and marques, there were variations in specifications, features, trim levels, and special editions. Here's a brief overview:
Austin and Morris (BMC): The Mini was originally launched as two models: the "Morris Mini-Minor" and the "Austin Seven" (later renamed "Austin Mini"). These early Minis were fundamentally the same car but had different badges and minor trim differences.
Rover: When the Rover Group took over, the Mini continued production with updates and modifications. Rover introduced several special editions, often with unique color schemes, badges, and interior finishes, such as the "Paul Smith" edition or the "John Cooper" editions.
British Leyland: During its tenure, the Mini saw various changes in terms of engine options and trim levels. The "Clubman" version, for instance, had a squared-off front end, distinguishing it from the rounded design of the original Mini.
Cooper and Cooper S: These are performance variants of the Mini, with sportier engines and tuning. The Cooper S, in particular, garnered a reputation in the 1960s for its success in rally racing.
SALE OF THE DAY
🏁 Stunning 2013 Ferrari 458 Italia SOLD:
The exhilarating 2013 Ferrari 458 Italia has found a new home. This symphony of power and elegance, wrapped in a Nero Daytona finish, has just been snapped up at a remarkable price of $140,000 on Collecting Cars.
Let's delve into why this deal could be a win-win for both buyer and seller.
🏁 Unparalleled Thrills: With a mid-mounted 4.5-liter V8 generating 562bhp, this beast can go from 0 to 60 in 3.4 seconds. The striking Nero Daytona paint, combined with carbon-fiber inserts and alloy wheels, ensures you're not just driving, but making a statement.
💰 Smart Buyer's Choice: At $140,000, this purchase is a steal. Especially when you consider a the same model with very similar mileage sold for $208,000 in January. This savvy buyer secured a true gem without breaking the bank.
🤝 Sensible Seller's Move: The decision to let go at this juncture could be seen as a strategic one. Market dynamics can influence choices, and sometimes, it's wise to cash in and embrace new adventures.
🔧 Impeccable Condition: With just 25,770 miles, this beauty is in prime shape. The Nero Daytona paint gleams, and the well-maintained interior showcases its timeless allure.
🌟 New Beginnings: As this Ferrari sets off on a new journey, it leaves behind a trail of admiration. A dream fulfilled for the buyer, and a chapter closed for the seller, all wrapped in the aura of this exceptional 458 Italia.
NEARLY SALE OF THE DAY
2019 Mercedes-Benz G550
Bold Exterior, Luxe Interior: Picture a Mojave Silver Metallic finish paired with the AMG Line and Exclusive Interior packages, creating a true showstopper. Leather seats and natural grain walnut wood trim complete the look with elegance.
Unleash the Power: With a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, this G550 boasts a mighty 416 horsepower. Its 9-speed automatic transmission and 2-speed transfer case stand ready for any adventure.
Loaded with Perks: From heated/ventilated front seats to a Burmester sound system and navigation, this G550 spoils you. Plus, the three-zone climate control ends thermostat battles for good.
Market Realities: Bids soared to $101,000 at auction, but the deal didn't close. The luxury car market in general has cooled down.
In recent sales, the same year, make & model went for $116,700 in January, and fetched $150k & $160k in November 2021.
The problem more than often when cars like these don’t sell is that the sellers have an unrealistic price in their head.
