YESTERDAY'S AUCTION RESULTS

Today, we're dubbing it BMW Day on The Daily Vroom. But first, lend me your ears...

I can almost hear you saying, "But wait, there aren't any BMWs in the 10 most expensive cars sold yesterday!" In fact, since I began tracking the top 10, there's barely been a BMW in sight. But fret not, my friends, these are yesterday's sales, and TODAY is BMW day 🎉.

Before we cruise into BMW territory, let's take a quick detour to chat about the Tesla Roadster that was sold yesterday for a cool $115,000. If you caught one of my newsletters last week, you might remember me mentioning that auction sites generally have a tough time getting their hands on Teslas. Cars & Bids is the only site really vrooming along with them. I specifically pointed out that market leader BaT hadn't sold any Teslas this year. And, as if on cue, a Tesla sale on BaT happened just 3 days later.

This little twist perfectly encapsulates the nature of data and trends. I can only sift through the past, spotlighting trends and insights based on that data. But the present and future always hold surprises, like BaT finally selling a Tesla this year. Time to buckle up and see what's next!

INDUSTRY NEWS

Go ahead and skip this playful pause if you're only here for the BMW's juicy specs and those irresistible BMWs up for auction.

Yesterday, Cars & Bids threw a little party by launching their integrated inspection service. If you've ever peeked at my in-depth dissection of Cars & Bids and tons of other posts, you might've caught me saying that they need some spice, and a snappy acquisition could be just the ticket for their new owners.

But alas, they've yet to take that path. Since January, they've added a nifty integrated shipping widget, which I'm quite fond of (even though the shipping fees are a tad higher than what you'd find by scouting around, it's still oh-so-convenient). And now, they've thrown pre-inspections into the mix.

They tell us, "Our inspections are the fastest in the industry."

Saunter over to their website, and the words transform into "Lemon Squad inspections are the speediest in the industry." I'm confused, are they or Lemon Squad doing the inspections?

If you're not in the loop, Lemon Squad is the go-to car inspection company with its far-reaching tentacles across the nation, all cozily owned by Wrench.

Now, regardless of their choice of words, is this truly a game changer? Plenty of sites, like Clasiq in the U.S. and Car & Classic in the U.K., are already strutting their inspection stuff.

It's like when Apple rolls out a new phone, flaunting that latest feature that's oh-so-nice to have but not quite enticing enough to ditch your previous model. Sure, it's lovely that Cars & Bids are offering this, but will it really move the needle?

Will adding an inspection service ($199) make a difference whether you'd list your car on Cars & Bids website?

2023 BMW SALES

Of the 500+ BMW's that have been sold this year, over half of them are the 3 series.

Therefore I wanted to dig a little deeper and see what trends I can see from the data and show you what cars are selling and who are selling them. Below are the 10 most expensive sales up-to today.

Fun fact: just over 1/5 of the sales are convertibles.

The higher priced series 3 are being sold on Collecting Cars. They might 'struggle' to get the volume that other sites have, but their average prices are certainly not average and are usually right at the top-end. Which probably results in higher profits or does it?

Quick math calculation:

Cars & Bids charge 5% of sale price. $19,100 x 5% = $955

$955 x 86 cars = $82,130

Collecting Cars charge 7.2% of sale price. $41,100 x 7.2% = $2,959.20

$2959.20 x 45 cars = $133,164

Even if Cars & Bids charged 7.2% they'd still be making less than Collecting Cars whilst selling 40 cars more! (obviously I don't know either companies internal costs).

But it just shows, that ALL websites need to concentrate in getting higher priced vehicles. Maybe that's why Collecting Cars aren't going after the U.S. market (yet).
