Discover the Hot Selling Car Years of 2024 🔥

PLUS: The bargain FJ Cruiser...

The Daily Vroom

Good morning, Vroomers,

Today, we’re going straight into it, no chit-chat from me!

MARKET LEADERBOARD

💰 The figures shared below don’t count any other sales such as car seats, memorabilia etc… All online auction sites are analyzed to put this leaderboard together.

I only include websites that have sold 5+ cars in the chart below. Which means Hagerty and many others did not sell 5 vehicles yesterday!

At last, our market leaderboard welcomes a fifth contender, even if just for a day. Hats off to PCarMarket for racking up $694,000 in vehicle sales through their auctions. The prospect of a third major platform consistently making waves in the US market is truly exciting, promising to add even more dynamism to the scene. Whether PCarMarket will become that stalwart remains to be seen. Meanwhile, yesterday's total sales neared an impressive $6.5 million—a solid day's work by any measure.

YESTERDAY’S TOP 5 SALES

Yesterday WE HAD PCarMarket as top of the tree with the sale of the ‘21 McLaren.

What Years Of Cars Are Selling?

If you're a regular here, you've likely observed that our market leaderboard typically showcases the same four companies. Curiosity got the best of me, prompting a deep dive into the years of cars these platforms have sold throughout 2024. Admittedly, I wasn't sure what I'd find, but exploring this aspect turned out to be quite the intriguing journey, revealing which car years reign supreme in popularity.

Reviewing the charts from the four platforms, it's interesting to note that for BaT, Cars & Bids, and Collecting Cars, 1995 stands out as the lone pre-2000 year among their most popular. This aligns with Collecting Cars' trend of moving a higher volume of newer, pricier vehicles, a point we've touched on previously.

On the other hand, Bring A Trailer features 2023 as its singular recent year, indicating a preference among sellers to offload newer models. It caught me off guard that there weren't more sales from the '80s and '90s, given those decades often catch my attention.

With these platforms leading the charge in 2024, I aimed to pinpoint the top 5 car years they collectively favor. Here's what I uncovered:

As you can see 2004-2008 are the top selling years, which was not what I expected.

These are the top selling cars for each of those years:

  • 2004: A Lamborghini Murciélago sold for $342,700 on Collecting Cars.

  • 2008: A Mercedes-Benz SLR sold for $355,500 on Collecting Cars.

  • 2006: A Lamborghini Murciélago sold for $650,000 on Cars And Bids.

  • 2005: A Ford GT sold for $391,000 on Bring A Trailer.

  • 2007: A Porsche 911 sold for $273,000 on Bring A Trailer.

Daily Auction Spotlight

A few auctions that caught my eye today. Click on the image to be taken directly to the listing.

I just love these FJ Cruisers. I think they will only become more collectible. With only 37K miles, this one is just getting broken in. My daughter just turned 16, got her learner's permit and I have been thinking that one of these would be a great car for a new driver. Reliable, rugged and fun, these are way cooler than the other choices I have looked at. Manual transmission is my preference, and I hope it will be hers too. A bit of history on this one - it was sold in 2022 for $40k with 16k miles. And with just a day to go bidding is at $16,000!

This car has a fun history and I keep imagining what it must have been like to pick this car up new in midtown Manhattan in 1962. It was first delivered to Don Allen Midtown Chevrolet of Manhattan, New York, and it was acquired by the seller in 2012 from the estate of the previous owner of 39 years. A multi-year restoration that began under previous ownership was completed in 2023, and the car subsequently received NCRS Top Flight honors. We are nowhere near the cost of a multi-year restoration that has been documented in detailed receipts totalling $238K so, unless bidding picks up, this may stay in my neck of the woods in CT.

This looks like an honest early 911 with history dating back to the original buyer, a serviceman in the US Army who bought this car in Europe and brought it home with him. My dad was stationed in France a few years before this. He had a choice between a Porsche 356, a Mercedes 190sl and a Volvo. He bought the Volvo and brought it home with him. I would have chosen differently... This has been repainted (well), and seems like a great and collectible early driver. Hopefully this finds a great home and gets some regular exercise. This is probably about as close as any of us will come to owning a 1964 901 prototype. The only two of those that remain were just profiled in a great video.
