Ford GT Frenzy: $600k Icon vs $85k Lookalike!

PLUS: Will SBX Fumble This Gem Of A Car?

The Daily Vroom

Hey Vroomers!

A question I get asked a lot is about which specific models/makes are struggling right now. This isn’t a straight forward answer and I could go off on a number of tangents, but one make/model I’ve been seeing recently a lot of is lower-end Porsches which are really struggling: $10k–$15k price point. These were once great entry-level Porsches, (in my mind they still are) but now it seems buyers are less interested in the lower-tier, higher-mileage models.

If you have any questions about anything car related, feel free to get in touch. As many of you know, I do answer every email… I look forward to hearing from you.

Catch you tomorrow,

MARKET LEADERBOARD

💰 The figures shared below don’t count any other sales such as car seats, memorabilia etc… All online auction sites are analyzed to put this leaderboard together.

I only include websites that have sold 5+ vehicles in the chart below.

If there was ever a chart that showed the gap between the market leader and everyone else, this is it. The difference between BaT and the next closest, Cars & Bids, was 100 vehicles. Let’s face it—BaT is playing in its own league, and the rest are just trying to keep up. We've seen this kind of dominance in other industries. Yahoo was on top of the world until Google took over. Remember when Blackberry and Nokia were the kings of cell phones? Yeah, where are they now?

Now, I’m not saying that’s going to happen here. BaT is anything but complacent. In fact, this past year has been one of their most innovative yet, and they’re not slowing down. But just because it looks impossible for the competition today doesn’t mean things won’t change tomorrow. And who knows, there could be new platforms on the horizon that shake things up.

On the sales front, after a rough Monday, things bounced back a bit with over $6 million in sales. That said, the average sale price came in lower than usual at $38k, as you'll see in the top 5 sales below.

YESTERDAY’S TOP 5 SALES

As predicted, we didn’t see the big blockbuster sales yesterday, though the 2006 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren from Collecting Cars led the charge. The other sales, like the 2018 Porsche 911 GT3 Touring and the 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster, were solid but nothing earth-shattering. However, the next few days could bring some of those bigger, headline-grabbing sales—let’s wait and see!

2006 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren $265,300

1989 Porsche 911 Speedster $245,000

2018 Porsche 911 GT3 Touring $233,222

1963 Chevrolet Corvette 327/ L76 Split Window Coupe $195,000

1966 Pontiac GTO Hardtop Coupe $156,000

Auctions To Keep An Eye 👀 On

Let's talk about this 2006 Ford GT that's up for grabs. Tungsten Grey, just 14.9 miles on the clock - t's a collector's holy grail. But hold your horses, 'cause there's more to this story. (isn’t there always!)

SBX has got this beauty on the block, and sure, they sent out a standalone email with all the bells and whistles. Great imagery, all the selling points laid out nice and pretty. But every single link in that email? Dead. Nada. Zilch.(broken link 😭). Now, I get it, mistakes happen. But when you're the new kid on the auction block and desperate for a big sale, you triple-check that stuff. Hell, quadruple-check it.

So lets take a look at how Supercar Blondie has promoted this beauty, with her 100 million-strong social media army? Radio silence. I've scoured her Instagram, her Facebook - not a peep about this GT. It's like they've got a golden goose and they're keeping it locked in the basement.

I hate to sound like a broken record here, but what the hell are they doing? In the time it took me to finish my morning coffee, I found a buyer who's snatched up several of these GTs, plus a bunch of others who've been in the bidding game. It took me all of two minutes.

Now, let's not forget - this is still a killer car. Another low-mileage Tungsten Grey GT (with even fewer miles) sold for $605,000 back in February 2023. So as long as the reserve is not crazy this Ford GT should sell.

I'm sitting here hoping they're being proactive, pulling out all the stops to find buyers. But based on what I'm seeing (or rather, not seeing), I'm starting to wonder. This GT deserves better, and so do their potential buyers and sellers.

Come on, SBX. You've got the car, you've got the platform. Now show us you've got the hustle to make this auction pop. Otherwise, what are we even doing here?

Bottom line: This is a great car with untapped potential. Let's hope SBX steps up their game and gives this GT the auction it deserves. I really want to see them succeed, but they're not making it easy on themselves.

For those that are fans of this model, another one in the same color is ending today with 13k mileage. I’d hope SBX is keeping a close eye on this one.

Continuing on the theme of the Ford GT, here's a fun and much cheaper alternative..

A 2018 Superlite GT-R. If you've got Ford GT dreams but your wallet's screaming "yeah, right," this might be your ticket to ride.

This bad boy is a fiberglass-bodied Ford GT replica, and it's packing some serious heat under the hood. We're talking a Ford Performance 5.2-liter Aluminator V8 that's supposedly churning out 580 horses. And get this - it's mated to a gated 6-speed manual.

Now, before you start drooling, let's get real for a sec. This ain't no trailer queen like the Ford GT above, It's got some battle scars - namely a rear-end collision back in March 2023. The Carfax says "moderate to severe damage," but hey, at least the airbags didn't pop.

Oh, and about those miles? Well, let's just say it's a bit of a mystery. The odo shows about 1,700 miles, but there's a mileage inconsistency on the Carfax, so we're in TMU territory here.

But let's focus on the good stuff. This GT-R's got some tasty bits - QA1 coilovers, Brembo brakes, a front-axle lift system (because who doesn't hate scraping that front splitter?), and even air conditioning. It's like having your cake and eating it too.

Currently, the bidding's sitting at $85,500 with one day to go. That's a fraction of what you'd pay for a real Ford GT. Sure, it's not the real deal, but for the price of a well-optioned pickup, you could be turning heads and burning rubber in something that looks like it just escaped from Le Mans.

Bottom line: If you've always wanted a Ford GT but your bank account laughs at the idea, this Superlite GT-R might just be the next best thing. Just be prepared for a lot of "Is that real?" questions at every gas stop.
