MARKET LEADERBOARD

💰 The figures shared below don’t count any other sales such as car seats, memorabilia etc..

I only include websites that have sold 5+ cars in the chart below. Which means Hemmings and many others did not sell 5 cars yesterday!

Wrapping up another week and guess what? Porsche and Ferrari are still ruling the roost in the high-end sales department. Let's see what the weekend brings. Yesterday? Pretty standard stuff - we saw sales just under the $5.5 million mark.

I love it when we see a variety of players leading the pack. Yesterday was a mixed bag with PCarMarket, Collecting Cars, and Bring a Trailer all making some noise. As you're reading this, keep an eye out for the sale of a 2015 BRABUS B63 S-700 6X6. Looks like Collecting Cars is keeping up its streak of moving those top-tier rides.

ARE HAGERTY SALES GOOD VALUE?

Hagerty, the big player in car insurance, has been making some bold moves in the market, snapping up events and storage businesses left and right. I've touched on this before in my writings. Remember when they launched their auction platform over a year ago, aiming to challenge the big names? Well, let's just say they're not exactly shaking things up. With an average of just 27 cars sold a month, barely one per day, they're not even close to the top 5 auction sites. For comparison, BaT moves about 80 cars daily.

Now, Hagerty's recent No Reserve Collections caught my eye. I was curious to see how these sales would pan out. Interesting tidbit: these auctions are run by Broad Arrow Group, the physical auction house that Hagerty previously acquired. I'm wondering how Hagerty Marketplace fits into all this. Is it a branch of Broad Arrow, or is Hagerty directly steering the ship? Or maybe they're just leveraging the well-known Hagerty brand to push these sales?

Let's jump into a few of these sales. I randomly picked three that sold yesterday to analyze.

First up, a 1954 Cadillac Eldorado. It went for $53,500. Now, comparing this with similar models sold online in the past year, which fetched between $72,000 and $130,000, this seems like a steal for the buyer, but not so much for the seller.

Then there's the Mercedes-Benz G500, sold for $37,504. The only other car of similar specs sold this year went for $35,000. Seems like a fair market price to me.

The last one I checked out was a 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible, which fetched $136,500. I couldn't find any online sales to compare, so I dived into the physical auction market. Prices there ranged from $224,000 to $268,000. Looks like the buyer got quite a bargain.

This is just a small sample, but it paints a clear picture. Hagerty has a long way to go to become a serious contender in this space. They need to show sellers they can bring in the big bucks, or they'll continue to trail far behind the leaders.

Something that really bugs me about Hagerty is how they display their sold prices, including the buyer's premium. This is what physical auction houses do to ‘inflate’ the sold price. Here at The Daily Vroom, I'm sticking to showing you the actual sale prices.

Get this & I can’t believe I didn’t spot this earlier. Hagerty slaps a hefty 7% premium on sales, which is more than what most sites charge. And there's no cap! So, on a million-dollar sale, you're shelling out a whopping $70,000. Compare that to Bring a Trailer, where you'd only pay $5,000. Makes you think, doesn't it?

FLIP OF THE DAY

This 2023 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Weissach Package that just sold for an impressive $215,000, up from its purchase price of $175,720. This car isn't just about speed and looks; it's a savvy investment. Although I’d prefer to drive it!

Finished in Arctic Grey and sporting just 489 miles, this GT4 RS is no ordinary ride. It's packed with a 4.0-liter flat-six engine, revving up to a staggering 493 HP. The Weissach Package takes it up a notch with carbon fiber details and titanium tailpipes – it's a real showstopper.

What's really interesting is the market trend here. Just last month, a similar GT4 RS Weissach went for $222,000. And there's another one up for grabs, currently bidding at $194,000 with four days left. Seems like these cars are hitting the sweet spot in the market.

NEXT WEEK’S POTENTIAL BARGAIN

Keep an eye on this one: a 2000 Land Rover Range Rover 4.0 SE, currently bidding at just $1,100 with 6 days left. This British 4x4 could be the bargain you've been waiting for.

Sporting a classy Blenheim Silver finish over a gray leather interior, this Range Rover has a lot going for it. It's not just about looks; with only 58k chassis miles, this vehicle is barely broken in. The cabin boasts heated power-adjustable front seats and a cassette stereo for that retro vibe, along with modern comforts like dual-zone automatic climate control.

Under the hood, it's been given a fresh start with a replacement 4.0-liter V8 installed in 2018, which now has only 15k miles on it. The original air suspension has been swapped out for a more reliable coil spring and shock setup, ensuring a smooth ride on or off the road.

Sitting on 18" five-spoke alloy wheels and wrapped in Bridgestone tires, this Range Rover combines rugged capability with classic style. Given its current low bid and the features it packs, this could be the steal of the week for anyone looking for a luxury SUV with a touch of adventure.
