I only include websites that have sold 5+ cars in the chart below. Which means Hemmings and many others did not sell 5 cars yesterday!

Yesterday saw one of those anticipated million-dollar contenders close in. The '21 Ford GT Carbon Series nearly hit the mark, pulling in a cool $975,000. Now, some might say that's a 'soft' price, but I beg to differ. That's the market doing its thing, and honestly, both the seller and buyer nailed it in my book.

But let's talk Hagerty for a sec. They had six no-reserve cars up for grabs, and I was all set to see them all sell. However, one of those listings has mysteriously vanished, like it's been swallowed by the earth. Why can't Hagerty just be clear, like other sites, and tag it as 'cancelled' or 'withdrawn'? It bugs me that they see hiding unsold listings as some sort of power move. It's their call, of course, on how they run their show. I'm just here to lay out the facts.

What’s Gone Wrong At Hemmings?

I've been pretty vocal about Hemmings and their challenges. A while back, I dished out some thoughts about their struggles, (see below) and not long ago, here I talked about their website's revamp – a slick new look, but still dragging some old baggage.

But here's the real deal: It's not just about the website or its quirks. It's the bigger picture of how Hemmings runs the show.

Let's talk numbers, because, at the end of the day, that's the heartbeat of any business.

Check this: In September, Hemmings auctioned off 104 cars, raking in $3 million. October saw 125 cars going for $2.3 million. Last month? Just 86 cars, pulling in $1.7 million. And this month, so far, we're looking at 19 cars sold for a modest $390k. We're just a third into the month, so maybe they'll land around $1.2 million with about 60 cars sold if they keep up this pace. Their average sale price sits around $20k.

Alright, let's not drift too far into the weeds with website traffic and stuff – we're here for the love of cars, after all. But, it's worth zooming out for a sec to see how Hemmings is doing in the big leagues against the top online car platforms.

Here's the lowdown: Hemmings is pulling in serious traffic, right up there with Cars & Bids. But here's the twist – while Hemmings' numbers are on a downhill slide, Cars & Bids is on the up and up.

Bottom line? With the kind of traffic Hemmings is getting, they should be knocking it out of the park. Yet, compare them to C&B, and it's like night and day – C&B sold a whopping five times more cars than Hemmings did last month.

So, what's next for Hemmings? Dabble in real estate, maybe? Believe it or not, they're actually giving it a shot on their website. But seriously, you've got to wonder if there's a voice inside Hemmings saying, "We can do better." That might explain the website redesign, though it still feels like they're not going all in.

I've got a bunch of ideas for them, but it seems like they're not exactly hunting for suggestions (not mine, or anyone else's) on how to up their game in the online auction scene. My bet? They'll probably stay the course, same old, same old. Isn't that what someone called the definition of madness? 🤷‍♂️

Yesterday, we delved into Rivian sales, and I threw out a question – would you buy a Rivian? We actually own an R1T, and have had it for 18 months. Thus far, it's been an impressive bit of kit. Build quality is excellent, customer service has been efficient, and the driving experience... well, it's a truck that drives like a sports car. Handling is impressive (especially for such a heavy vehicle), and the R1T's 0-60 time is just 0.1 seconds behind our McLaren 570S. I can also tow our Airstream trailer, and does as good a job at that as our RAM 2500 (although it doesn't have much range in that scenario). All told, an amazing first vehicle from a brand new company. We'd buy another

Tesla's Supercharger network is truly a game-changer, as long as Rivian supports that then it's definitely an option.
