PLUS: Uncover How a Chris Harris Video Elevated the '90 Aston Martin V8 to Iconic Sale Status

The Daily Vroom

Hey Vroomers,

Welcome to today's dose of automotive excitement! I've got to say, writing today's edition has been a total blast—yesterday was jam-packed with some phenomenal car sales, and the adrenaline doesn't stop there. We've got a lineup of more amazing rides selling today, tomorrow, and beyond.

MARKET LEADERBOARD

💰 The figures shared below don’t count any other sales such as car seats, memorabilia etc… All online auction sites are analyzed to put this leaderboard together.

I only include websites that have sold 5+ cars in the chart below. Which means Hagerty, PCarMarket, Hemmings and many others did not sell 5 vehicles yesterday!

In the world of online auctions, it's all about the balance of ying and yang—some days you're met with disappointment, while others can be downright exhilarating. Today was one of those thrilling days. I found myself completely captivated, my gaze locked onto my screen as I frantically switched between tabs, trying to keep up with the flurry of incredible auctions closing one after another. Let's just say, I missed more than a few.

To throw some numbers at you, we saw a staggering $9.5 million in vehicle sales today alone, with a whopping $6.8 million of that happening on BaT. Now, I'd love to dive deep into each and every sale (and even the ones that didn't quite make it), but that would result in the longest newsletter in history—and I respect your time far too much to drag you through that.

But let me give you a taste of the day's excitement.

YESTERDAY’S TOP 5 SALES

So many spectacular sales here to highlight. Click on any image to be taken directly to the listing.

1988 Porsche 959 Komfort $1,795,000

1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS Touring $670,000

2024 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Weissach $450,000

1990 Aston Martin V8 Vantage - X Pack $391,000

1961 Porsche 356B Roadster $325,000

Yesterday’s Highlights

Kicking things off with the "less-than-stellar" news, the auction for the 2014 McLaren P1 closed with a high bid of $1,475,000. While this didn't hit the seller's target, it marked a monumental moment for Cars & Bids, drawing in a massive crowd and turning the event into an absolute spectacle. A big salute to Cars & Bids for proving they can rub shoulders with the elite, handling multiple bids over the $1 million mark with aplomb.

From what I've gathered, the seller had their sights set on $1.65 million, making the highest bid not too far off the mark. It's evident the dealer is keen to sell, but in the high-stakes game of premium car sales, the real question is—how eager are they? Transitioning this to a live auction might necessitate the buyer shelling out a hefty six-figure commission, a factor that could play into backroom negotiations. Perhaps there's a middle ground that could lead to a handshake.

This might just be a scenario where both sides need a night to sleep on it before coming back to the table. It's worth noting the highest bidder is also in the dealership business, eyeing a potential flip. They'll need to be sure of having a buyer or two lined up because no one wants to incur a loss on such a stunner.

And let's not forget, competing auction platforms could be whispering sweet nothings to the dealer, hoping to sway them for a future listing. Though, in the ever-evolving auction landscape, a few months can bring about a world of change.

Before we get to the biggest sale of the day. I have to highlight this incredible auction from Collecting Cars. A sale price of $391,000, this 1990 Aston Martin V8 Vantage X-Pack is not just any classic—it's a storied masterpiece with roots extending into the world of celebrity and high-performance motoring. Once owned by Jay Kay, the famed car enthusiast and frontman of Jamiroquai, this vehicle is a testament to automotive excellence and prestige.

Distinguished as a rare factory ‘X-Pack’ variant, this grand tourer is one of merely 95 examples produced, making it a gem in the realm of collectible cars. Powered by a 5.3-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine, it pushes out an impressive 432bhp, paired with a coveted five-speed manual transmission. It stands out not only for its powerhouse performance but also for its unique aesthetics, being one of just two right-hand drive models adorned in the sophisticated Litchfield Black, complemented by black hide and elegant walnut trim inlays.

If there’s one video I recommend watching today, it’s this Chris Harris's review/driving video—a must-see and surely helped sell this stunning car.

Next on the docket, the spotlight sale of the day goes to the legendary 1988 Porsche 959 Komfort for $1,795,000. This beast is a rare gem in the online auction world, marking only the second of its kind to grace the digital stage. Imagine this: it's 1987, this Porsche is tearing up the roads with almost 200mph and 450hp, and then bam! It hits the $1 million mark in bids faster than you can say "speed." This car, alongside the F40 and the Carrera GT, is on my "I'd remortgage everything" list—well, maybe not the wife and kids, but you catch my drift.

Major kudos to roadscholars1, a seller who's been a constant force on BaT for the past seven years, for listing this piece of history. And let's not gloss over the fact that this sale was part of the Gruppe P collection.

Honestly, I could go on forever about each of the stellar cars listed yesterday, each worthy of its own saga. Yet, the seller almost hit a home run, with all but one finding new homes.

A huge shoutout to felmegbl, now the proud owner of 19 cars from BaT. What's wild is that his average spend on previous wins sits around $49k. The guy's a dark horse—barely a peep out of him in the comments, yet here he is, outbidding seasoned pros with portfolios of high-end wins. It's a clear message: never underestimate who's in the auction room. It's a lesson for platforms everywhere to cherish every participant because who knows what surprises they might bring to the table—or how they'll sing your praises to their circle.

To wrap it up, this sale is a testament to the power and potential of online auctions for high-ticket items. Trust me, there's more I want to say about luxury cars finding new owners via the web, but I'll save that hot take for later. Keep your eyes peeled—more to come on this topic!
