Inside the Cars & Bids survey results

PLUS: Honest feedback from real users and how the platform can raise its game...

The Daily Vroom

Good Morning Vroomers,

Thanks to everyone who jumped in on the Cars & Bids survey from yesterday’s newsletter and sent over emails and comments. There is a lot to unpack, no surprise since so many of you are active buyers and sellers on Cars & Bids and have strong, informed takes.

With hundreds of comments (and still many coming in as I write this) and ten poll questions, I cannot showcase everything (though I read and appreciate them all). I have pulled a mix that highlights the different perspectives out there and of course I will share the results from each poll as we go.

For those that want to see cars that are sold for big money, check out this 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder that sold yesterday for $2.3m.

Anyways, lets get into the results of the survey.

Your Feedback on Cars & Bids

Our first question was ‘Right now, Cars & Bids feels:’ This was a very mixed answer as you can see. Below are a selection of your comments..

Finally implementing all the feedback they have been getting for years and volume has not increased. Just recently increased listings as suggested 2 years ago. Slow to move, got rid of talented, experienced team members, to hire tech, non - car talent. But overall, by implementing everyone’s ideas from the past, I expect to see them grow or at least they should.

Best online listing presentation. BaT lacks real passion.

They've made a bold move to capitalize on the kinds of cars that get lost on BaT. You know my people are on BaT and I send nearly all of my cars there however... Today I have a diesel Cayenne starting on C&B. I purchased it and used it this summer and then I submitted it to BaT, had it accepted and then when it came time to launch it there were 4 others already live. Not wanting to be lost in that jungle, I pulled it and sent it to C&B. We'll see how it goes. My feeling is that stuff that's just a car, but not a terribly interesting car, those things are getting lost on BaT because of the shear volume there these days. I still 100% believe that BaT is the way to go in this space but I am happy to see C&B finding it's legs and place in the market.

I don't think they're quite up to speed on evaluating classic cars

Anyone who isn’t Bring a Trailer is still trying to find a lane online.

In danger of trying to be BaT

Still in their own unique niche, Don’t have the following of BAT

C & B is almost an afterthought for the main reason that the cars seem to Craigslist quality for the most part. Additionally, the listings are overwhelmingly from California and worse, high-mileage BMWS. I don’t see anything on there I could not find on marketplace.

Very difficult to deal with and out of touch with the classic market. They will only take a car at no reserve or very low. For the limited market they have, I would not risk a low reserve.... The reserves they want on a classic car are generally wholesale or below.

they continue to grow and now they have PE money behind them - go Doug

Next up we asked you ‘When you start searching for a car, Cars & Bids is:’ As you can see more than often it is often one of people’s first stops.

I look at C&B along with BaT, PCar, and a couple of others every day. It's my #2 and I've successfully sold cars on C&B.

Many more every day vehicles

You just can't beat BAT

I’m loving their selection of cars and always check them out

Their presentation is extremely clear and presentable which is much better than other sites. Now that as you’ve highlighted they’ve increased their number of auctions its more eye candy for me and it makes it more difficult for me to not bid.

Next we asked you, ‘How do you feel about Cars & Bids adding pre-1981 classics?’. We had lots of answers, and it was a clear winner, most of you are onboard with their decision.

Would you, as an auction platform, want to be the Nieman Marcus of Cars, WalMart, or a little bit of both: Target? You never know what someone will fall in love with surfing the site.

Doug and Filippo absolutely hate and do not want to do it. That’s why is feels off brand.

Since 1981, all cars sold in the U.S. have been given standardized 17-character Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs), making them uniquely and reliably documented in every major database. Edmunds +1 As time goes on, more vehicles from the 1980s, ’90s, and 2000s naturally enter the collector-market, and many exotics and limited-production cars from recent decades are immediately treated as collector-grade. This growing, well-documented fleet is significantly larger than the surviving pre-1981 market and involves fewer unknowns, which draws more bidding, greater trust, and more efficient verification. By focusing exclusively on 1981-on collector cars, you tap into scale, clarity, and lower risk as your niche.

focus on the 1980's forward - own it

feels more like a wanna be now

Such a good decision, I’ve already bought 2 older cars from them. I wish they’d have more pre 81 listings

Up next we asked you ‘For anyone who’s thought about selling: how attractive does Cars & Bids feel as a place to list your car? Here’s what you said with the majority of you feel it’s somewhat attractive.

Their reserves display lack of confidence in their ability to sell - they seem more interested in sell-through rate.

Inconsistent results, team under reserves cars and the higher income buyers are not there.

Prices seem really low, lower then Carvana.

To me you get your car seen by a lot of people compared to bat where you car can easily get lost amongst hundreds of other listings

I’ve sold numerous cars with them and always had excellent customer service and the ones that sold went for decent money, so im very happy

This next question was aimed at buyers and so many of you responded in a positive way. As a buyer, what stops you from bidding higher or bidding at all on C&B?

Nothing - bid less than my limit and won a unique tow vehicle, super happy.

Too many dealer-sourced listings.

I set a amount based on the vehicle I'm bidding on...Looking at other comps try to be within range but I usually get outbid...Not just on C and B but goes for others as well....Just part of online bidding.....

A fairly large percentage of those sold cars do not sell. Buyers and sellers are not thoroughly verified and cause issues.

It seems to be all dealers were selling cars on cars and bids. I've tried selling on cars and bids and they want you to put your reserve less than Mannheim MMR prices. I can wholesale it for cheaper than that. So I'm not gonna take the risk. Plus I don't feel like they have a strong Bidder following. I rarely see cars ever bring a lot of money on there. It could be good if they gave people more freedom but they try to keep it too much. Seems like most everything has higher miles than just your average used car.

Don't trust their seller and listing vetting process

I think BaT has a larger audience with more experienced enthusiasts, so a better chance of finding issues and potentially getting a better price.

miss the peanut gallery comments that are common on BAT

Nothing stops me — in fact, I purchased my most recent car through a Cars & Bids auction and had a great experience!

We then asked you If you’ve sold on C&B, how would you rate the time it takes to get approved and go live?Majority feel happy with the timeframe.

Very easy to list with them - sold 3 cars and each time was painless. Never sold on another platform so don’t know what to compare to, but overall i’m very happy

They used to have a team that would help dealers and push through our listings, now...they don't. That is what separated them from BAT. They answered the phone.

they have crazy requirements. New manager will end up burying it

Used to be quicker and easier with the old team. I have complained about getting it back to what is was, but no changes as of late. That being said it’s still quicker than BaT, so a win for me.

Next we asked you Would you attend a Cars & Bids event if it were nearby?

If Doug was there, yes. I don't care about the other guys, they are nice but Doug is Cars and Bids. Where is he?

Heading to Atlanta for Cars and Bids event this weekend!

If they had in my area I would 100% be there. Please look at events in Missouri

There’s a real lack of quality events round my neighborhood, so I would be there in a heartbeat and would be a real bonus if Doug would be there.

Big question here about Doug. Do you think C&B should lean away from Doug DeMuro as the face of the brand? As you can see pretty much down the centre.

He hasnt taught them how to answer and talk on the phone

I think Doug gives it personality

Doug slows progress and is not interested in anything other than what he wants.

He is Cars and Bids, they need him

How much is he really involved on a day to day basis? Probably not very much and you can tell his take on each listing is mostly AI and not him, as there’s no way he’s writing all of these.

Our final question What’s one thing Cars & Bids could fix tomorrow to make the platform better?

quit being so high and mighty and answer the phone

I don't know, it feels like every other car auction site. They all feel the same. Focus on getting cars that are not on every dealer's lot, like getting something unique. More direct from consumer stuff.

More listings of pre-1981 vehicles.

The problem is the comments from non-bidders that totally take on a life of their own. Most of the keyboard warriors try to show their expertise when in most cases the comments ARE OVERBLOWN AND DETRIMENTAL to the seller. Good information is always helpful but some of these comments are based on opinions and not actual facts

Communication is clumsy. A dashboard like BaT has is vastly superior.

Get more buyers, its simple but needs to be done

Work the RNM’s quicker w high bidders. Monitor them better as time kills deals.

Lower fees of course

Add a marketplace area where cars can be sold if they don’t reach their reserve. Pcarmarket has this and I think it’s fantastic.

Bring back the dealership team. My guy would answer the phone within a ring or two. That is why I used them vs. BAT. What about moderation? Where did that go? So many awful comments just sit there for hours. Bottom line the lay offs hurt them, they got rid of what made them special to dealers, guys that would repeatedly sell on there. Plus Doug is too busy to come to events? Sends the wrong message. 2023 C&B was better.

Cars & Bids continues to fill an important space in the enthusiast auction world. It’s fun, fast-moving, and still one of the best places online to discover something genuinely interesting, whether that’s a quirky daily, a no-reserve gem, or the occasional six-figure icon.

From all the comments, messages, and survey responses I’ve received, it’s clear that most people genuinely like Cars & Bids, but there are a few pain points that keep coming up. The good news is they all feel easily fixable.

Communication. Many of you mentioned that reaching the team isn’t as easy as it used to be. We know they’ve streamlined internally, but better communication and a more personal touch would go a long way. It’s an easy win.

Dealer vs. Individual Sellers. Some people feel the balance has tilted too far toward dealer listings. That’s not unique to C&B, it’s an industry-wide trend, but it’s still worth addressing. Getting back in front of real enthusiasts, at events and within the community, can help bring that balance back.

Consistency. Listing quality and seller engagement can vary. Tightening review standards and offering light support to sellers would help keep the platform’s energy consistent.

Cars & Bids has also clearly stepped up its auction volume recently, and if they keep pushing in the right direction, I can see them expanding even further. As I said yesterday, they shouldn’t worry about BaT or try to compete head-to-head. They should stay in their lane, keep refining what makes them unique, and focus on crushing the experience they already own.

Overall, Cars & Bids remains a vital, enthusiast-driven space, and most people genuinely want to see it win. With small improvements in communication, outreach, and presentation, it can easily strengthen its position as the platform that still feels approachable, human, and fun in a world that’s becoming increasingly corporate.
