πŸš€ Kick off Your Weekend with a Fun Project Car, F-150 Insights, and Much More

πŸ—£οΈπŸ’ PLUS: My Friday rant & Celebrating Our Favorite All-Rounder Truck.

The Daily Vroom

Happy Friday Vroomers

I’m asked all the time to put some project cars out here. So first off today is the finest and maybe the most fun project car I’ve seen in a while & in my view the the price is great value.πŸ› οΈπŸš—πŸ’°

With so many car auction sites popping up, people often ask me who's going to take the lead. Most people think BaT is here to stay, I don’t disagree! But who will be joining them?

The real long-term winners will be the ones that value trust, transparency, and a few other crucial factors. I've got some thoughts on who's getting it right (and wrong), so get ready for a little Friday venting session below. πŸ—£οΈπŸ’

I'm also taking a closer look today at May’s sales of the beloved F-150. I mean, what's not to love about this vehicle? The rich history, amazing performance, sleek design, and its versatility make it a real stand-out in the crowd. πŸššπŸ’–

PROJECT SALE OF THE DAY

πŸš— 1971 Porsche 911T Coupe Project Car

Sold at PCarMarket for $31,250. A superb opportunity for restoration, this car has been refinished in a unique yellow color with a contrasting green stripe.

πŸ”§ Mechanical Details:

The car is powered by a 2.2-liter flat-six engine and has a 5-speed manual transmission. The suspension has been lowered for a more aggressive stance.

🎨 Exterior:

The exterior boasts 15” ATS β€œcookie cutter” wheels wrapped in older Yokohama tires. The finish shows several imperfections due to age and suspected track use.

πŸͺ‘ Interior:

The interior comes with black leatherette door panels and dashboard, along with red aftermarket Corbeau bucket seats. Some carpet pieces are missing and the dashboard shows some cracking.

πŸ“ Seller's Notes:

The seller suggests it as an ideal candidate for total restoration or use as a daily driver, making a very cool rat rod or hot rod with strong mechanicals but rough paint.

🧐 My Opinion:

Given that this Porsche 911T is a project car, it requires significant investment in terms of restoration if the buyer wants to go down that route. The price tag of $31,250 may seem high for a project car, but considering it's a classic 1971 Porsche 911T, the value is inherent in the car's pedigree and potential. I’ve actually seen similar project cars go for a lot more.

The cost of full restoration needs to be considered, but once restored, these models can be highly valuable, circa anything from $80,000-$200,000 dependent on how it’s restored. Therefore, in the right hands, this could be seen as a good investment.

πŸ”₯ Trust & Transparency In The Industry

As someone who values honesty and fairness, I believe in providing an unbiased perspective. My ultimate aim is to foster success for everyone involved in the online market.

That being said, I do have a strong opinion on why transparency is of paramount importance in the car-selling realm, considering the less-than-perfect reputation some dealerships have earned for their lack of complete truthfulness. With the advent of online auctions and the inability to physically inspect vehicles, platforms have sought innovative ways to assure potential buyers that what they bid on is exactly as described.

Various approaches have emerged, such as showcasing CARFAX reports, or utilizing knowledgeable community members as gatekeepers, like BaT does. While their expertise is invaluable, it's worth acknowledging that unnecessary remarks from uninvolved individuals can sometimes arise. Nevertheless, the collective knowledge within the community enhances buyer confidence and augments the transparency already demonstrated by the multitude of cars sold on these platforms each week.

Instead of delving into the merits and drawbacks of each platform (which I'll cover in a more detailed post), most strive to offer some level of transparency. Car & Classic and Clasiq have long provided inspection reports and escrow services, while Cars & Bids recently introduced inspection reports and a nifty shipping widget to enhance trust and transparency.

Nearly every site displays both sold and unsold cars, a crucial trust feature for buyers. However, there is one exception: Collecting Cars. They exclusively showcase sold cars, no unsold cars and they remove bidding and comments from the sold listings.

To be frank, this leaves me with a sense of unease. Why aren't they sharing this information? Are they concealing something? Do they prefer not to reveal their sell-through rate? I'm not suggesting that they should conform to industry normsβ€”I genuinely appreciate platforms that dare to be different. However, when it comes to transparency and trust, it remains perplexing why Collecting Cars deviates from the standard set by others in the industry πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

What do you think? Should Collecting Cars show us sold/unsold cars with comments and bidding history?

Login or Subscribe to participate in polls.

While I have your attention, let's address another concern I have regarding auction sites: the absence of contact information. Collecting Cars, for instance, only offers a form to fill out with no provided email or phone number. Cars & Bids does have an email and live chat option for sellers, but no phone contact. As for BaT, I'm not sure if they have any contact information as I can’t find it!

I understand the potential risks associated with displaying phone numbers, but why not implement a live chat widget that could largely be automated? This would offer an additional layer of transparency that could truly impact a sale.
