Lotus Delight & A Bargain $150,000 Sale (REALLY)

PLUS: Did Whiskey ๐Ÿฅƒ give better car insights?

The Daily Vroom

Hey there, Vroomers! ๐ŸŒ…

This week is Monterey car week, with some incredible cars on show and lots of physical auctions taking place. Iโ€™m thinking of going ๐Ÿค”. But only if I can bring value back here to The Daily Vroom. If anyone is lucky enough to go & wants to meet up for a coffee, be in touch- Iโ€™m 50/50 at the moment.

So, today was supposed to be all about diving deep into Bring A Trailer. But whoa, they've sold a crazy amount of cars! Analyzing all that data and dishing out some cool trends and insights is turning out to be a bigger task than I thought. I'm burning the midnight oil to get this info to you asap. Although I may or may not ๐Ÿ˜‰ be out tonight (Tuesday) sampling some of the best single malt Whiskeyโ€™s. ๐Ÿฅƒ

I do have one question that I would appreciate your answer on.

MARKET LEADERBOARD

I've received several inquiries about the methodology behind these figures. Let me clarify: I source the daily sales numbers, which are publicly available on most platforms, and then calculate the ratio against the total number of listings a site has for that day.

For instance, Cars & Bids sold 25 cars yesterday out of 30 auctions that concluded. This translates to 25/30ร—100=83% โ€“ their sell-through rate.

The process can be a bit nuanced, especially when certain platforms are hesitant to disclose figures for unsold cars. Fortunately, I have devised strategies to accurately track data across all sites.

As always if you donโ€™t see a site on the leaderboard, itโ€™s because they have sold less than 5 cars. But I am tracking every major car online auction site and now with Sothebyโ€™s Motorsport & PistonHeads I have two more to track, lucky me! ๐Ÿ˜€

YESTERDAYโ€™S SALES

Will there come a time, when Bring A Trailer own less than half the pie? Itโ€™s up to others to compete. Can it be done? I think it can.

Some great cars were sold yesterday. For me, bargain of the day was the Gulf Oil Edition CAV GT. See below for my take on it.

Dive into the insights below to uncover each platform's golden era of sales. Furthermore, discern which car vintages resonated across all platforms.

For instance, the 80s classics reigned supreme on Collecting Cars, while the turn of the millennium rides dominated Cars & Bids. Not to be outdone, Bring A Trailer found its niche in the 90s gems. It's worth noting, however, that these insights are based on a single day's data.

Presented below is a heatmap highlighting the top 5 car makes across the top 4 platforms. This visualization clearly indicates the total sale price of each make by its respective platform.

Given that Porsche was the top-seller yesterday, let's delve into the average sale price across platforms to see how they stack up against each other.

After examining Porsche sales, let's turn our attention to BMW. We'll assess the average sales figures and sale quantities from yesterday to discern the differences. Here we can see that Collecting Cars has the highest average selling price, whereas BaT have sold the most.

SALE OF THE DAY

๐ŸŽ‰ Sold for a Steal at $150,000 on 8/15/23 on Bring A Trailer! ๐ŸŽ‰

Listen up, car enthusiasts! ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’จ We've got a tale of a legendary beast that recently found a new home. This beauty, reminiscent of the iconic 1960s era, was scooped up for a mere $150,000. You heard it right! A price that'll make even the most seasoned car aficionados double-take. And, let's be real, you couldn't even think of building one for that price these days! ๐Ÿค‘

History Dive ๐Ÿ“œ: The Ford GT40, a high-performance endurance racing car, was designed to give Ferrari a run for its money (literally) at the Le Mans 24-hour race. It did more than that โ€“ it won the race four consecutive times from 1966 to 1969! The design was so influential that it has inspired numerous replicas and reinterpretations, including the magnificent 427-Powered Gulf Oil Edition CAV GT.

About This Icon ๐ŸŒŸ:

  • Built in the style of a 1966 Ford GT40 by Cape Advanced Vehicles in South Africa. ๐ŸŒ

  • Powered by a roaring Roush 427ci V8 linked with a ZF five-speed manual transaxle. ๐Ÿš€

  • Adorns a Gulf officially licensed blue and orange paint scheme โ€“ a nod to its racing heritage. ๐ŸŽจ

  • Luxurious black leather interior with fixed-back bucket seats. ๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ

  • Comes fitted with modern luxuries like a backup camera. ๐Ÿ“ธ

  • Only 91 miles shown on the odometer. Barely touched! ๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ

  • A tool kit will accompany the sale, for the tinkerers out there. ๐Ÿ”ง

This vehicle isn't just a car; it's a piece of history, an ode to the golden era of racing. And to think it went for such a bargain! Previous builds of a similar nature have fetched much higher prices. A steal for the buyer and a treat for the eyes for the rest of us. ๐ŸŽŠ

Here's to the legendary 427-Powered Gulf Oil Edition CAV GT! May it continue to turn heads and drop jaws wherever it roars. ๐Ÿฅ‚๐Ÿ”ฅ

If you ever spot this marvel on the streets, tip your hat to a legend from the past that still stands tall in the present. Safe travels! ๐Ÿ›ค๏ธ๐ŸŒ…

AUCTION OF THE DAY ๐Ÿคฉ

๐ŸŽ๏ธ Auction Spotlight: The 2020 Lotus Evora GT โ€“ A Symphony of Heritage & Performance ๐ŸŽ๏ธ

Link to auction here

Today, we're not just talking about a car; we're delving deep into an emblem of British automotive artistry. Allow me to present the 2020 Lotus Evora GT. ๐ŸŒŸ

The Lotus Legacy ๐Ÿ“œ: Founded in 1952 by Colin Chapman, Lotus Cars quickly made a name for itself in the world of motorsport. Chapman's philosophy was simple but revolutionary: "Simplify, then add lightness." This ethos has been carried forward in every vehicle Lotus has created. From the Formula 1 tracks to the quiet lanes of Norfolk, Lotus cars were designed to deliver a pure driving experience.

The Lotus Evora represents a significant chapter in this legacy. Introduced in 2008, it was the first all-new car platform from Lotus since the early '90s. Named after the words Evolution, VOgue, and auRA, the Evora was aimed at combining the track-honed agility Lotus was known for, with everyday usability.

Why the Evora GT is Special ๐ŸŒŸ: The 2020 Evora GT is the pinnacle of this model range. It embraces its predecessors' ethos but brings in modern touches, both in terms of performance and luxury. It's a car that feels at home on a twisty backroad, a racetrack, or even a long cross-country cruise.

Under the Hood and Beyond ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ: While the supercharged V6 it houses is derived from Toyota (a nod to reliability), everything else about the car screams British racing pedigree. Its lightweight composite body, precision-tuned suspension, and driver-focused cockpit ensure that every drive is an event.

Historical Context: The Evora's design pays homage to Lotus's illustrious past, especially its racing achievements in the 1960s and 1970s, yet it doesn't feel dated. The car's aesthetics, especially in the striking Monaco White, are both timeless and modern.

Moreover, the Evora GT's livery and design cues can't help but remind enthusiasts of the iconic Lotus race cars that once dominated tracks around the world, echoing a time when Lotus was the name to beat in motorsport.

In Summary: This 2020 Lotus Evora GT isn't just a car; it's a piece of automotive history, a testament to British engineering, and a continuation of Colin Chapman's vision. Whether you're behind the wheel or admiring it from afar, the Evora GT promises a connection to a rich legacy of passion, innovation, and the pursuit of driving perfection.

Here's to the lucky individual who gets to call this masterpiece their own. Drive it, cherish it, and remember the legendary journey it represents.

Where will this sale end up? Here are all the online auction sales so far this year.
