MARKET LEADERBOARD

💰 The figures shared below don’t count any other sales such as car seats, memorabilia etc… All online auction sites are analyzed to put this leaderboard together.

I only include websites that have sold 5+ cars in the chart below.

Yesterday, I anticipated a relatively calm day on the auction front, expecting many platforms to reserve their marquee sales for later in the week. However, the flurry of auctions concluding and the frenetic pace of last-minute bidding glued me to my screen. Surprisingly, the day culminated in $6.1 million in total sales. Notably, there weren't many standout high-ticket items; instead, a steady stream of mid-range sales dominated, bringing the average sale price across all platforms to $43,000.

YESTERDAY’S TOP 5 SALES

Once again Collecting Cars are in the top spot đź‘Ź.

Alumni Catchup

In yesterday’s edition of The Daily Vroom, we spotlighted several Alumni listings from Bring a Trailer. This piqued my curiosity about the journey of these Alumni cars post-auction.

Starting today, I'm excited to introduce a new segment in our daily updates where we'll track the progress of these Alumni listings. We'll delve into whether they sold, how their sale prices compared to their original listings, and any other interesting twists in their auction stories. It's a fascinating way to see the market's dynamics at play and to observe how values change over time.

Below are the top 5 Alumni sales yesterday. The arrows in the diagram below show whether the vehicle sale has gone down or up in value.

In the latest roundup of Alumni auctions, we've spotted some fascinating trends among the classic beauties that crossed the auction block. Notably, 3 of the 16 vehicles showcased appreciable gains in their value, while one managed to fetch its original selling price, a testament to its enduring appeal. Let's dive into the details of these standout vehicles:

Spotlight on Appreciating Classics

  • 1967 Alfa Romeo Spider: Originally sold in 2020 for $67,000, this timeless Italian masterpiece has seen its value climb to an impressive $80,000. Remarkably, this increase comes without the addition of any miles, highlighting its pristine condition. The Spider benefited from some expert attention, including the installation of a PerTronix solid-state ignition, new spark plug wires, and a comprehensive tune-up, ensuring it runs as smoothly as it looks.

  • 2001 Bentley Arnage Red Label: This epitome of luxury and power originally found a new home in November 2023 for $16,600. It has since seen a significant value increase to $27,000. The Bentley remains un-driven under its current stewardship, with substantial work undertaken to elevate its condition. This includes new tires, spark plugs, and batteries, alongside servicing the transmission, differential, and an array of systems from braking to cooling, and even the air conditioning, ensuring it's in top form for its next lucky owner.

  • 1994 BMW 540i Touring: A rare find, especially in such a well-maintained state, this BMW was originally sold in November 2022 for $16,290 and has now increased in value to $19,500. Despite its 288,000 miles, the vehicle hasn't been driven since its last sale, but it has received significant care. In 2022, work was carried out to replace the rear main seal, air conditioning compressor, flywheel, brake pads, rotors, and spark plugs, highlighting the owner's commitment to preserving this classic's performance and appeal.

Auctions Ending Today

This Modified 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Coupe is a tastefully modified low mileage example of a 964 that ticks all of the boxes, if one of those boxes includes a tiptronic transmission. Often, the tiptronic cars end up less modified. For those that are looking for a two pedal driving experience (no judgements from me) this would be the one to buy. Well sorted, with custom accents and RUF wheels, offered by a known top seller with a great reputation, this presents a great opportunity for the right buyer. Offered at no reserve, this will find a new home today.

This early Isetta is well sorted and highly desirable if you are looking to unleash 12hp while watching the world go by, slowly, through beautiful curved glass windows. Whatever doesn't fit in the interior with you can be loaded into the basket that is mounted on the rear luggage carrier.

This 1991 BMW 318is Coupe seems like a really fun build. I haven't seen this car personally, but I shared it with a couple of friends in these circles and they all seemed to know the car and its owner. Despite its race inspired looks, this build was optimized for street and show, but that doesn't make it any less desirable for me. It does seem to be well sorted and a very clean build. I have to assume that the reserve is set quite a bit higher than the current high bid of $4,100.

Speaking of fun builds, this one brings me back to my childhood. If it wasn't for you pesky meddling kids, I would have gotten away with it too...

This project wagon is, well, a real project. We do like to highlight special cars with low and affordable entry prices for aspiring collectors and this listing, at no reserve, may well be on the lower end of that spectrum. The buyer may need to bring an actual trailer as well as an actual tetanus shot. That being said, I have seen (and owned) cars that have more rust. While this one was picked of some parts, it comes with some spares as well. This would be a really cool starting point for someone looking to build a Scandinavian overland build.

I used to own one just like this 87 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Unfortunately, my mom totaled mine. She wasn't wearing her seatbelt and rolled over twice after being t-boned in an intersection. This car was built like such a tank that she was remarkably OK. Shaken, but OK.

This is the granddaddy of all modern SUVs, from a time before multi-zone climate control and back seat video screens. These were built in a time where back seat entertainment was limited to playing 20 questions or I Spy and cuddling with the family golden retriever. This might be one to watch and, if the reserve is reasonable, someone may take home a bargain on one of the most classic SUVs of all time.

Yet another V8 manual wagon. My cousin used to have one of these in Boulder, CO. He let me drive it up the mountain that he rides his bike every day. I was exhausted just driving that road... These are an absolute pleasure to drive and are powerful, agile, fast and fully competent in all conditions. I do love powerful wagons, a 6 speed manual just makes this check all of the boxes. Even better, the seller was able to contact University Audi where this car was serviced from new until 2021, and they provided all of the records that were previously missing.
