Why This Million Dollar Sale Is Going To The Showroom!

PLUS: 3rd time lucky for the 1959 Ferrari GT buyer 🍀

Hey Vroomers!

Today, no chit-chat, we’re gonna dive straight into the numbers.

See you tomorrow,

MARKET LEADERBOARD

💰 The figures shared below don’t count any other sales such as car seats, memorabilia etc… All online auction sites are analyzed to put this leaderboard together.

I only include websites that have sold 5+ vehicles in the chart below.

Well, look at what we've got here! Two days in a row with total sales just shy of $8.5m. Talk about consistency in the market! It's not often we see the collector car world lining up numbers like this across all platforms.

But here's where it gets really interesting - for three days straight, we've had Bonhams Online popping up on our market leaderboard. That's right, the Brits are coming! This puts the UK companies in a 3 vs 2 lead against the US platforms on the leaderboard. Who would've thought?

Now, I'm not one to stir up international rivalry (okay, maybe I am), but come on, USA! Surely there's a platform or two stateside that can step up their game and make those sales to crash our leaderboard party. I mean, we invented muscle cars, for crying out loud! Are we really going to let the land of tea and crumpets show us up?

Don't get me wrong, I love seeing the global competition. It keeps things spicy. But I can't help but wonder what's going on with our homegrown platforms.

Either way, this trend is definitely one to watch. Will the UK platforms keep their momentum? Will a US underdog rise to the challenge? Or will we see a dark horse from somewhere else entirely?

YESTERDAY’S TOP 5 SALES

Each one of these cars deserves a write-up, but for now (read down below about the Senna) I want to bring to your attention the 1959 Ferrari 250 GT Pinin Farina Coupe. This auction ended yesterday with a Reserve Not Met at a high bid of $311k. But here's where it gets interesting.

With the new 'make a final offer' feature, the bidder came back with a bid of $352,222 that was accepted. Now, you might think that's the end of the story, but there's more to it.

This car was previously sold on the platform for $402k last year. And get this - this buyer was the second-highest bidder back then, with a bid of $400k. Talk about patience paying off. I’m always preaching here about patience and here’s the prime example!

So our buyer waits for the car to come around again on the platform. Misses out initially, but then grabs it at the third opportunity. And here's the best part - he still saves $50k from his original offer last year. On top of that, the car has had $10k spent on it since the last sale.

That's a pretty solid win for the buyer. He played it smart, with a bit of luck on the side, waited it out, and now owns a stunning piece of automotive history for less than he was willing to pay a year ago, plus some recent work thrown in. That's how you navigate these auctions, folks.

And let's not forget, Bring a Trailer gets a fee they wouldn't have seen before with this new 'make a final offer' feature. Seems like everyone's coming out ahead on this one.

Just goes to show, sometimes waiting and watching can really pay off.

Million-Dollar Magic

Well, folks, it seems like forever since we've seen a seven-figure sale in the online auction world, but we're back in business! Yesterday, a 2019 McLaren Senna roared past the million-dollar mark, fetching a cool $1,175,000. It's about time we had some high-octane excitement in our digital showrooms again.

This particular Senna, number 133 out of 500, is a grey beauty with just 503 miles on the clock. It's a fitting tribute to the legendary Ayrton Senna, packing a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that churns out a whopping 789 horsepower. Talk about a track day dream machine!

Now, here's where things get interesting. The buyer? This is their first purchase on Bring a Trailer, but they've clearly got a laser focus on the finer things in British engineering. Our detective work reveals that they've only ever bid on McLarens before. But wait, there's more - they've sold one car previously, a rather non-descript Firebird. The plot thickens when you look at that Firebird's license plate, (zoom in) which proudly displays "McLaren Newport Beach." Interesting, isn't it?

Connecting the dots, it seems our mystery buyer might just be affiliated with McLaren Newport Beach. For those not in the know, Newport Beach is where wallets go to lose weight. It's as ritzy as it gets, folks.

My prediction? This Senna isn't destined for some millionaire's private garage. Nope, I'd bet my bottom dollar it'll be gracing a showroom floor with a price tag north of $1.5 million before you can say "downforce."

In the hustle and bustle of our daily auction watching, it's easy to forget just how big the numbers can get in the online car auction world. To put things in perspective, I've included some charts below that show what's been happening this year so far.

Interestingly, only two platforms have managed to break the million-dollar barrier in 2024: Collecting Cars and, of course, Bring a Trailer. Last year, we saw PCarMarket join this exclusive club, but they haven't repeated the feat yet this year. We've been keeping an eye on SBX Cars, hoping they'd make their million-dollar debut, but as of now, they're still waiting for their breakout sale. You can read more about their progress further down in the newsletter.

These charts serve as a reminder of the incredible potential in the online auction space. While million-dollar sales might not be everyday occurrences, they're far from extinct. This Senna sale proves that the right car at the right time can still command eye-watering prices, even in the digital realm.

Supercar Blondie's MEGA Push

So there I was, mindlessly scrolling through Instagram (as one does), when BAM! A post from SupercarBlondie catches my eye. She's got "MEGA" plastered all over it in all caps, so you know she's pulling out all the stops to push those auctions ending yesterday and today. With her massive following, you'd think these cars would be flying off the virtual lot, right?

Now, I'm the kind of guy who always looks on the bright side. Why worry about what might go wrong when you can dream about what could go right? It's all about that positive mental attitude, folks.

Anyway, I kept tabs on two auctions wrapping up today (Wednesday): that sleek glass boat and a sweet '70 Mercedes-Benz 280SE. Drum roll, please... and... well, hate to break it to you, but neither sold. Bummer. From the looks of it, the final bids weren't even in the ballpark. But hey, don't get down! There's always a silver lining if you look hard enough (it's my specialty, after all).

Let's dig into the Mercedes auction for a sec. It racked up 5.5k views. Not terrible, but not exactly breaking the internet either, especially considering Supercar Blondie's been plastering these auctions all over her social media empire. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that her 110 million followers might not be the target market for these rides. Who knew?

So what's a supercar influencer to do? Well, that's a whole other can of worms (and another post entirely), but let's just say there are plenty of ways she and SBX could zero in on the right crowd. I've got some ideas, but I'll save those for another day.

Now, remember that silver lining I promised? If you mosey on over to their results page (and let's just ignore those Cybertrucks for now), you'll see they've managed to offload some cars off-platform. It's not exactly setting the world on fire, but hey, it's something to build on, right?

In this game, you've got to celebrate the small victories. And who knows? Maybe next time, that MEGA push will land a MEGA sale. There are after-all two more auctions closing today. Will they sell?
