MARKET LEADERBOARD

💰 The figures shared below don’t count any other sales such as car seats, memorabilia etc..

I only include websites that have sold 5+ cars in the chart below. Which means Hagerty and many others did not sell 5 cars yesterday!

On Friday, the online auction scene was bustling, with an impressive $6 million in vehicle sales, which was a stark improvement from the days before. Come the weekend, even though many auction platforms took a break, we still saw a respectable $6.5 million in sales. I'll keep saying this till I'm blue in the face: these platforms should be tapping into the weekend market too. There's a real opportunity here, and I'll be shouting from the rooftops that auctions should keep the energy up, right through Saturday and Sunday!

PONTIAC FIREBIRD TRANS AM SALES

There's something undeniably special about the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. For me, it's not just a car; it's a symbol of automotive freedom, a testament to the era of muscle cars that transformed American roads. From its roaring engines to its distinctive styling, the Firebird Trans Am has always been more than just a vehicle – it's a piece of history, a canvas of memories.

In this analysis from June-November, we'll explore together the Firebird Trans Am's market dynamics through various lenses: How have the prices fluctuated from the 1960s to the 2000s? What colors are most favored by collectors? Which models have fetched the highest prices at auctions recently, and what trends can we observe in sales across different platforms and days of the week? This deep dive aims to provide a nuanced view of the Firebird Trans Am's enduring appeal and market trends.

10 Most Expensive Trans Am Sales

The top sale for $180,000 is a 1980 Pontiac Firebird Turbo Trans Am Special Edition that was once owned by none other than Burt Reynolds. You can see the car at the top of this section.

TOP SELLING PLATFORMS

I found it quite eye-opening to discover how significantly Bring A Trailer leads in sales for the Trans Am’s compared to other platforms. Initially, I had assumed, albeit incorrectly, that the Trans Am would have a more diverse sales distribution across various platforms, with BaT perhaps focusing more on other models. This observation has been a real eye-opener, underscoring BaT's extensive reach and versatility in selling a wide array of vehicles, including the Trans Am. It's a lesson learned about the platform's expansive market presence, demonstrating that BaT is indeed a major player in selling almost everything in the collector car realm.

Decades vs Platform

It’s not too surprising to see the 1970’s as the most popular decade of Trans Am sold since June.

Platform vs Average Price vs Decade

With Heatmaps, I find the best place to start looking is either on the left hand axis which has all the decades or the bottom axis to look at the name of the platforms.

it's evident that the 1970s Pontiac Firebird Trans Ams command a notable presence in the market, with Hagerty registering the highest average sale price for this decade. However, it's crucial to note that this figure is derived from a singular sale, which, although substantial, doesn't provide the breadth of data necessary for a comprehensive market analysis. In contrast, other platforms show a greater volume of transactions, offering a more robust data set that might better reflect the decade's market trends.

The 1980s and 1990s models, while not reaching the peaks of the '70s, display consistent sales across multiple platforms, indicating a steady collector interest. Bring A Trailer, in particular, shows a strong performance across several decades, suggesting it's a favored platform among enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Price Distribution

In this box plot diagram, (one of my favorites) you can see the full range of prices for each decade, as well as the median price. The bigger the box, the larger the range of prices. The dots on the outside of the boxes are outliers and potential one off sales that could be a limited edition, a famous owner etc..

Average Sale Prices

Below, you'll find the graph showing the overall average price trends for the past five months. Following this, I've segmented the data into more detailed graphs, each representing a different decade. These decade-specific visuals offer a clearer perspective on how the prices vary with the year of manufacture, providing a deeper understanding of the interplay between the age of the vehicle and its market value.

1970’s

1980’s

1990’s

2000’s

Interestingly, it is only the 2000’s where we see a gradual rise in sale prices from July.

Days Of The Week

No significant different of sales for the days of the week with Trans Am’s - they sell every day!!

If you want to buy a Trans Am, you’re in luck! There’s a very interesting one up for auction ending this week, details on it are below.

F1 LAS VEGAS RECAP

While I usually focus on the world of online auctions, I couldn't miss talking about the F1 race that roared to life just down the road in Vegas this weekend. It was a spectacle of speed and style, spritzed in with a touch of glamor and celebs.

Max Verstappen claimed his 18th victory of the season at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, overtaking Charles Leclerc in what became one of the season's most thrilling races. Despite initially criticizing the event for its extravagance, Verstappen embraced the Vegas spirit, donning an Elvis-inspired fire-suit and celebrating with a victory lap filled with "Viva Las Vegas" cheers.

In a twist of fate, the race also saw Lewis Hamilton finish seventh, his 2013 Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 W04 fetched a handsome sum at an auction over the weekend. (see below in ‘Vroomy Reads’ section).

As I mentioned, I'm not the go-to expert for F1 details. But if you're keen on diving deeper into the world of Formula 1 at no cost, my buddy runs an F1 newsletter called ApexBite. It's packed with informative and visually appealing charts that are sure to captivate you.

You can explore it here, well worth a read.
