The Big BaT Survey Results Are In..
PLUS: Lots of praise, some frustration, and a few clear ideas to improve BaT
The Daily Vroom
Good Morning Vroomers,
Thanks to everyone who jumped in on the BaT survey from yesterday’s newsletter and sent over emails and comments. There is a lot to unpack, no surprise since so many of you are active buyers and sellers on BaT and have strong, informed takes.
With hundreds of comments (and still many coming in as I write this) and seven poll questions, I cannot showcase everything (though I read and appreciate them all). I have pulled a mix that highlights the different perspectives out there and of course I will share the results from each poll as we go.
Just a thought as I was writing this newsletter - Hiring a third party to dig this deep into the market would probably cost BaT a pretty penny, but lucky for them we are doing it for free. 😀
One last note, I have been ‘warned’ by my mail sender this email is long, and if you are reading in Gmail it will almost certainly be clipped. Make sure to hit "view entire message" (as shown below) at the end so you do not miss the full results and my take at the end of the newsletter.

Let’s get into it.

Your Feedback On BaT
Our first question was ‘What does Bring a Trailer feel today’. Overall feeling from the majority (and it was a LOT of you who filled this one out) was that BaT are stronger than ever. Below are a selection of your comments.
Continue their market leadership and expansion in Europe.
Friends tried to sell cars there and were rejected for what appears to be arbitrary or even flakey reasons.
Always top seller. Attracts very expensive cars and still has room for low priced bring a trailer units
+ Growing number and breadth of listings. - With auction pricing cooling somewhat, they need to adjust reserves to maintain their sell through rates.
I have just sold two cars on BaT and the pre auction and during the auction support is excellent. The after sale process with Caramel was terrible. Their mgmt of the software and auction process is excellent.
BaT has done a great job with growth, but is now overwhelming. I used to check BaT almost every day because it was always interesting. Now there's just too much selection, and I don't really visit unless I get a notification about one of my watched models.
BaT continues to become more imbalanced in the buyers favor as they scale listing volume with anything and everything they can throw against the wall in hopes it sticks. Other than certain specific makes and models that perform well, it's mostly a great platform for buying and finding under market opportunities. As professional and expert sellers move their volume elsewhere, naive casual sellers are filling the void and creating immense opportunities for strategic buyers.
Next up we asked you ‘When you start searching for a car, BaT is:’ As you can see more than often it most people’s first stop although 32% of you said just one of several tabs (I wonder what those other tabs are! we need a follow up!)

I'm more of a BAT seller than buyer. I find more reasonably priced vehicles using other methods when actively buying.
With more online auction platforms now to choose from, BaT must work to maintain their edge.
My interest in cars is quite varied and eclectic. BaT has more of everything and the comments are often illuminating, particularly if a type of car is not one I am well informed about.
I prefer going to Cars and bids first as I enjoy their selection of cars.
I have the bat tab open on my computer all the time as I do with many other websites so i’m always refreshing all the tabs to see if there is anything interesting.
Next we asked you, ‘What would make you choose another platform over BaT?’. We had lots of answers, but as you can see mainly you would choose another platform for a variety of reasons.

I have found it to be impossible to speak to anyone on the phone. When you call them, you receive a message that it may take a while for them to get back to you. But they never call you back All they want to do is communicate via email, and that they do not do will either
Overall, we have exceptional experiences with bring a trailer.
Quicker responses from BaT on all fronts... and with less attitude
My top 2 criteria: seller transparency and buyer fees.
Consistently higher sell-through for the year, make, model. Cutting commissions starts a spiral down the drain.
Its really more about the car I’m seeking than what site it shows up on. Fees have an influence, However sellers seem to be interrogated more heavily on BaT than other sites. This helps transparency on the car being offered. So maybe this gives an edge to BaT for two similarly listed cars with one on a different site.
Feel like you are missing an important option - better inventory. We will go where ever the best cars are.
Up next we asked you ‘How would you rate BaT’s communication during or after a transaction?’ Here’s what you said with the majority of you happy with the communication.

I would say BAT’s communication is “Fair”, and I say that because if you communicate the way they want to communicate… you are good. If you want to speak with someone… good luck.
DONT KNOW HOW TO ANSWER A PHONE
I’ve always had good communication with them and don’t have any complaints.
Absolutely intolerable!
I’ve bought and sold many many cars with BaT and all this time only had one issue which they resolved quickly for me. Now of course this maybe because I’m a powerseller which is great for me, but interested to hear how individual sellers get on.
It all depends on what your expectation is. They will not speak with you on the phone, but I knew that when my friend who’s been with them told me, so going in I was happy as long they communicated on time with me which they did.
This next question was aimed at buyers and seller and so many of you responded in a positive way. How was your last post-auction process on BaT?

Only made one purchase but seller was fantastic!
Very easy for me, bought a great car, seller was very responsive and I drove three hours to pick up last Thursday, very happy buyer.
The third party that processed the transaction (the registration in particular) was the slow part. Even so I found them reliable. Of course dealing with the DMV in my state (CT) is slow and painful so I can't put the full blame on BaT or its associates.
Bought so many cars and post auction with bat has nearly always been good. The only negative i would put is Caramel.
Whenever I sell a car, post auction has been a breeze. Last time which was last week had an issue with Caramel who in my opinion are 2nd rate compared to bring a trailer who should not be aligning with them.
Caramel is very poor at what they do.
We then asked you ‘Do you think BaT has gotten too big?’ This was a close one.

There needs to be some way to sort listings to eliminate the distractions of items with no apeal, e.g. Ferrari fitted luggage.
QUIT THE COMMENTS UNLESS YOU HAVE BOUGHT CARS DONT COMMENT! GET RID OF PROFESSIONAL BIDDRS THAT NEVER BUY ANYTHING
They need to stop selling used cars. Back when I sold my TR3 in 2015 they even poo pooed Corvettes. Minivans from the 80’s and 90’s struck a new low.
too many dealers...has lost the hobbyist community feel
If you are a buyer, you find what you want. If you are using the platform as entertainment, it could be frustrating and time consuming.
With over 1000 auctions going on a rolling basis the popular sellers still drive decent relative value. However it feels like over the last year-18 months the average watcher count and # of comments is down. It’s just too many listings to scroll. Possibly better defined sub categories would help
My excellent and rare car was buried among 174 others.
The proliferation of new neon, luggage, toy car collections ad naseum is ruining the site for many of us with busy lives. Stick with cars and put the rest on another site.
It just takes too much time to scroll through the daily onslaught of new cars and ending auctions. Lately it seems the process of highlighting favorites is not working. I need to look into why that is. Maybe they need to sort the daily listings of new auctions and last day auctions into groupings such as cars / motorcycles / automobilia-etc. so we can all focus on our main interests.
If they get really big I would even subdivide the car group emails into "near new" and "classic" or some such wording. Cars five model years old or newer (for example) could be listed under "near new." I once suggested not including near new cars on BaT back when there were a lot of flippers listing new cars that were on waiting lists at dealerships. I felt it was corrupting the site. Judging by the comments I got on that, a lot of people disagreed. So there is a place for them but if BaT gets to the point of listing 175 to 200, or more, new auctions daily, some kind of sorting would be helpful at least.
Our last open ended question was ‘What’s one thing BaT could fix tomorrow to make the platform better?’ Here I’ve posted a few more comments for you to take in…
Allow blocking of some commenters. Allow communication between commenters.
Ban boaboyoz from spamming/commenting on every single auction listing repeating basic specs of the vehicle finishing it with GLWTA just to boost his own thumbs up count
better understanding of why they don't want certain car
As an active collector buying and selling on multiple platforms, it's very frustrating to have a vehicle accepted and a nearly identical one rejected within a short period for no apparent reason. I do find BAT's time frame from submission to auction start much better than either Cars & Bids (who reject more than they accept) or Hagerty (with their insanely slow acceptance to auction waiting time).
Better communication with sellers and buyers for better transparency and stop hiding behind just using email as your sole source of communication.
Communication!!! Enforcing their rules and guidelines on both parties
ANSWER THE PHONE. QUIT BEATING PEOPLE UP ON RESERVES. STOP COMMENTS FROM PEOPLE WHO NEVER UY ANYTHING!!!!!
Let sellers know exactly when their auction will go live. As of now, it's mystery. Could be a week, could be a month, who knows...
get rid of the dealers
Better notification system
Somehow moderate the inane comments that come from people who think they know it all but have no intention of entering the bidding. Maybe limit it to one comment unless you are an active bidder?
I think it's becoming cluttered. By clutter I mean it's hard to separate segments of interest. When you're everything to everyone, you're nothing to anyone in particular. There is no "specialty" on BAT, and that makes it sort of hit or miss sometimes.
Have assigned reps to repeat sellers. I have gone to other platforms after having been assigned to reps who understand my business and make the partnering process fast and seamless.
Local buyer personally picked up my vehicle but somehow BAT did not know that and CARAMEL delayed 50% payment balance for several weeks.
With daily listings approaching 200, I'd suggest categorizing the offerings to make navigating quicker. Something basic, like pre-war, post-war, parts, wheels...but not too defined so that hidden gems get overlooked.
Too many ignorant commenters who have never bought or sold a car on BAT or anywhere. One guy kept asking me why my client didn't want to perform a cam belt service on his Testarossa - “but why,” he asked, because he had already spent $15k servicing the car before the auction. This guy never bid more than 10% of the value of any car. Now he's an expert. Somehow, these commenters have to earn the right to subtrifuge an auction.
Seems there is a lot of special attention and consideration given to the “big” regular sellers. I get it. Bigger fees. Fewer problems with sales likely. But less access to a one time seller for sure. Maybe they could categorize listings with a code to identify sellers by number of past listings. First timers. Over 5. Over 20. Etc. Just a thought.
More transparency for sellers such as when an auction begins.
Get rid of Caramel
Have "Direct Human" Communication via Phone if necessary, especially via Text or Email, Text Preferred. BAT's Communication Process is TERRIBLE! I have avoided BAT due to this and their Curating/Residual is too FIRM when a car is "closer" to "real, researched Market Value" by the Seller. I am a much less SELLER with BAT because of their "WON'T MOVE" on Residual.
I have had several cars declined by BaT for listing. Always get a crappy canned response that it does the not fit their criteria. Follow up calls to understand what i can do to improve go no where with BaT. Then later a similar car shows up on the site… why is that? If they would be clearer why my car was declined I would be able to fix and try again.
Bat has to stop listing multiple cars of the same make, model, and body style at the same time. There were 3 Karmann Ghia coupe’s listed this week, all live auctions at the same time…
I think with the shear size of BaT, often competing cars end up on the site at the same time and that is unfair to the Sellers.
More exotic cars!
I think we as car lovers are incredibly lucky to have BaT. What they have built for the enthusiast market is nothing short of amazing. Just think about how many incredible cars we get to see every single day because of their platform. Overall the survey results skewed positive and kudos to them for that.
A few themes keep coming up in the comments, emails and messages I have received over time:
Talking to a real person. Many of you wish it were easier to connect with an actual human when issues come up. I understand why that is difficult at scale, but it feels like an area worth revisiting.
Submission frustrations. This has always been a pain point. I understand it is a huge task to review so many cars, a good problem to have, but even a bit more context in the responses could go a long way.
Caramel experience. Caramel is a third party platform that I am sure BaT provides a lot of business to, but if Caramel cannot match the overall BaT experience there are other options out there.
Getting lost in the listings. With sometimes over 200 auctions per day it is getting harder for people to find what they want. Better navigation or filtering could really help.
BaT has built something incredible and the good far outweighs the bad. But these are real points I keep hearing and think are worth passing along. The platform has changed the way we all buy and sell and it keeps raising the bar for the market. If they can keep evolving in these areas, making it easier to connect with a person when needed, giving better feedback on submissions, improving how buyers cut through the sheer volume of listings, and making sure their partners deliver at the same level, it could become an even stronger experience for everyone who uses it.
