🚗✨ Thursday's Unbelievable Record-Breaking Sales!

PLUS: Update on Ed Bolian Sotheby's Motorsport Partnership

The Daily Vroom

Hey Vroomers! 👋

Sam here, hoping you're getting a kick out of these daily updates – I'm having a blast putting them together for you. Quick heads-up: today's edition of The Daily Vroom is the last one you'll see until next Wednesday. That's right, I'm giving you a little break on Monday and Tuesday – consider it my holiday gift to you!

But don't worry, we're going out with a bang today. We're covering the bumper day of sales from yesterday, and trust me, it's a doozy.

Here's wishing you and your loved ones a fantastic Merry Christmas. Can't wait to catch up with you all post-holiday.

Catch you on the flip side,

Sam

MARKET LEADERBOARD

💰 The figures shared below don’t count any other sales such as car seats, memorabilia etc..

I only include websites that have sold 5+ cars in the chart below. Which means, Hemmings and many others did not sell 5 cars yesterday!

I teased some major sales action recently, and wow, did it deliver. Yesterday's tally hit a massive $9.2 million in vehicle sales, one of the heftiest days of the year. Looks like some folks might be splurging their Bitcoin gains! I'm picturing some seriously happy faces around the Christmas tables this year, or maybe arriving in style in their new wheels. Big nod to Sotheby's Motorsport – they're climbing up the leaderboard. As for their partnership with Ed Bolian, I'll let you read up on that below. Might raise an eyebrow or two.

And let's not forget Car & Classic, coming in hot at second place for the day's sales. They've got a ride in the top 5 that's a real head-turner. Trust me, you'll want to check that out.

The Bargain(ish) 2012 Lexus LFA

Yesterday this 2012 Lexus LFA auction on Bring a Trailer for $725,000 – and you know what? That feels just about right.

We've been eyeing these models since their value shot up to around $800k in 2021, and now, it seems like the market's finding its footing. Sure, this one isn't the Nürburgring edition, but with its low mileage, the buyer's got a solid deal. A million less than the Nürburgring high bid? That's a steal in my book.

It's fascinating to see how these beauties have climbed from under $500k a few years back. This sale might just be the new benchmark for the LFA market – a neat blend of value and exclusivity.

Sotheby’s Motorsport Ed Bolian Update

Let's circle back to that Ed Bolian and Sotheby's Motorsport team-up. Remember when I talked about it before? They put up eight cars for grabs, and three of those were a no-reserve thrill ride.

First up, the 2017 Ferrari GTC4Lusso – it went for $150,000. Now, hold up, that's a steal compared to the last two online sales that hovered around $180,000 and $185,000 for similar specs.

Then there's the 1976 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow. This isn't just any old Roller; it's the one Bolian himself drove in the 2023 US Express cross-country cannonball. It fetched $15,900. No surprise there's nothing out there to compare it with.

And how about that wild card, the 1976 6-Wheeled Land Rover Range Rover? Snagged for $31,000 and again, no comparable sales to weigh it against.

But let's talk Ferrari. Looking at those numbers, the buyer definitely walked away with the bigger grin. They nabbed that beauty for a good chunk less than what we've seen recently.

Let's pivot to the other five cars in the Ed Bolian and Sotheby's Motorsport lineup, all listed with reserves.

Take the 2009 Ferrari F430 Scuderia. Its highest bid? Just $185,000, quite a bit shy of the $240k-$280k we're used to seeing for these models. Clearly, bidders weren't as eager to meet the expected price range.

Then the 2006 RUF Rt12 S, with a top bid of $413,911, not quite touching its previous sale price of $434,000 from 2022.

Another 2009 Ferrari 430 Scuderia in Grigio Silverstone ended at $190,500. Again, bids didn't match up to the usual rates for these beauties.

The modified 2013 Porsche Cayenne GTS for off-road action attracted a high bid of $33,000, which is about market rate for one of these.

And the 2006 Gated Manual Gallardo Spyder? Its highest bid was $68,500, though it's back up for sale at $95k.

So, what's the story here? Well, it seems the no-reserve cars did sell, but not with the frenzy we might've expected. As for the reserved ones, they didn't hit their expected highs.

This partnership, while promising, hasn't quite sparked the bidding war they might've hoped for. Bolian's big audience is clearly tuned in for the entertainment (like me), not necessarily to open their wallets. With another auction on the horizon – a 1997 Lamborghini Diablo SV (starting in 40 days!!) – it's a waiting game to see if this pattern holds. It's one thing to enjoy watching car adventures; it's another to invest in them.

Reflecting back on that poll where I asked if Ed's partnership with Sotheby's would be a game-changer, your responses were quite the mixed bag: 40% said 'yes', seeing potential for a big impact, 20% were undecided, and another 40% didn't think it would make much difference.

Considering the auction results we've delved into, it looks like those reservations held by some of you might have been on the mark. But it's not all lukewarm news for Sotheby's Motorsport – they did manage to sell three other cars yesterday. Perhaps some of Ed's followers did find something else in the lineup that caught their eye?

With a new influencer led platform coming in 2024, here’s a question for you to ponder.

Can car influencers turn their audience into high-value auction buyers?

Your Feedback

Alright Vroomers, let's talk about yesterday's poll. I popped the question, 'How about BaT rolling out a feature showing when a reserve gets lifted?' And boy, did you all chime in! We had one of our biggest poll turnouts, with a whopping 65% giving a thumbs up to the idea.

Now, let's dive into some of the standout comments you guys dropped.

If they haven't. I think it would be a benefit to both the auction houses and buyers to know if a reserve is lifted. It would be more beneficial to the both the auction and seller

Not that big a deal. honestly they really should go 100% no reserve on stuff that's 35 or 50 k and below IMO.

Why not? How could that be a bad thing

In this I say yes to a manual removal of the reserve, not an indication that the reserve has been met (which would be a tell of the platform estimated sale price)

If you are going to remove a reserve, start the auction with no reserve.

Then people would come to expect it, and if they don’t see it, assume the car won’t sell.
