Unraveling September: From Market Trends to Top Sales!

Shift into the analytics lane: The numbers, narratives, and nuances of September's sales

The Daily Vroom

Good Morning, Vroomers!

Today's newsletter is brief but impactful. A big mental note as I pen this down: maybe don't indulge in a few drinks before sitting down to write at midnight! Thankfully, for both our sakes, the majority of the research and drafting was already in place. It's just about weaving it all seamlessly now.

Let’s get right into it…

MARKET LEADERBOARD

💰 The figures shared below don’t count any other sales such as car seats, memorabilia etc..

I only include websites that have sold 5+ cars in the chart below. Which means Hagerty, PCarMarket and many others did not sell 5+ cars yesterday!

On Wednesday, sales dwindled, almost mirroring Monday's figures, with transactions just a hair under the $6m mark. If you glance at the sell-through rate above, it's evident that numerous cars didn't find buyers.

For today only, I've added a column to shed light on the number of vehicles that remained unsold. Many platforms prefer to keep these numbers under wraps, but I firmly believe in transparency. It's essential for everyone, including these platforms, to confront these figures head-on. This self-awareness can pave the way for them to enhance their strategies tomorrow.

With over 100 vehicles left unsold, one has to wonder: where do they go next? Does the owner attempt a local sale? Probably. Or perhaps they bide their time and reintroduce it to the market in a few months, potentially via a different platform? That's plausible too. The market has, by and large, cooled for several makes. Sellers, if they're keen on closing deals, will need to ground their expectations in reality.

SEPTEMBER’S SALES

Throughout this week, I've been gradually revealing details about September's sales. Today, I've chosen to divide the sales data based on the year 2000, examining both before and after that year to uncover any insights. This analysis is as beneficial for me as it is for you.

I must admit, the above results were somewhat unexpected for me. I had mistakenly assumed that cars from the post-2000 era would have outnumbered those from before 2000 in sales. This is precisely why I'm so drawn to diving deep into the statistics.

I noticed an interesting trend with the Ford GTs taking several spots in the top 10 priciest cars post the year 2000. Diving into the figures, I saw that six of these beasts got new owners this September, with their price tags ranging from $382,000 all the way up to a cool $1,000,100. And guess what? Every single one of them was auctioned on Bring A Trailer.

Out of this bunch, there was one that caught my eye - it had an 'Alumni' tag. It had previously changed hands for $366,000 back in January 2022. Fast forward to September, and it sold for $354,000 but with an added 500 miles on the clock. Gives you a bit of a hint about where the Ford GT market is currently leaning, doesn't it?

Ferrari and Lamborghini really steal the show when it comes to the top sales for cars pre-2000. Now, here's a quirky tidbit that might hint at where the crowd's heart truly lies. On average, those vintage Ferraris up for auction drew more views than the Lamborghinis from the same era. Does this mean the allure of a classic Ferrari trumps that of a Lamborghini for most? Drop your thoughts below! 👇

Pre-2000, Chevrolet, Ford & Porsche dominate sales. One of the very best sales and favorite car of mine was this ‘63 Chevy Split Window that sold for a remarkable $280,000.

Porsche dominate sales post 2000 with cars such as this ‘94 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6 that sold for a staggering $346,000.

For me, the heatmap above stands out as a prime way to visually depict the types of vehicles the leading platforms are pushing out. Remember, all these stats are focused solely on September's data. While I've highlighted the main car makes, I've left out a few, especially some motorcycle brands. Still, the essence of the trend is pretty clear with this heatmap. The stats here are so fascinating to analyze as there are so many surprises on what certain platforms sell a lot/little of. I could stare at this for hours!!

The platforms showcased above are fervently vying for a solid foothold in the industry. The heatmap vividly delineates the car makes where each platform holds the upper hand.

If you're considering selling a vehicle, these heatmaps can undoubtedly serve as a valuable guide for you.
