MARKET LEADERBOARD

💰 The figures shared below don’t count any other sales such as car seats, memorabilia etc… All online auction sites are analyzed to put this leaderboard together.

The reserve sell-through rate is just for cars that are listed with a reserve. The full sell-through rate includes all auctions, reserve and no-reserve.

I only include websites that have sold 5+ cars in the chart below.

Another good selling day yesterday (we're working on some metrics that will rate each day) with just shy of $7 million worth of vehicle sales.

The majority of the sales are in the 'lower' sales price bracket, but the average is still a very respectable $44k. What I think will be useful for me to find out, and of course for you all as well, is to see how that average sale price sits over full weekend sessions. Does it trend higher or lower compared to those weekday numbers?

It'll be really insightful to go back and analyze past weekend results to get a better gauge of where that overall average typically falls when buying activity ramps up with folks off work.

Weekends tend to be prime time for bigger ticket purchases (see below) from serious collectors and enthusiasts with a bit more flexibility. But then again, those days could also attract more casual/budget buyers just looking for a fun project car to wrench on.

Either way, having some hard data around those weekend averages will give us all a much clearer picture of current market temperature and price tolerance. An uptick in the mean sale price would indicate plenty of demand for high-quality iron. Flat or decreasing numbers may signify a shifting appetite towards affordability.

It's the kind of insight that separates out the anecdotal "the market is hot/cold" chatter from quantifiable facts. I'm really looking forward to digging into those numbers! Should make for a fascinating case study on buyer behavior and trends.

YESTERDAY’S TOP 5 SALES

How I love it when I see different platforms being featured in the top 5 sales of the day. Yesterday we had PCarMarket as the top dog, and Cars & Bids with their 3rd highest sale of the year courtesy of that Lamborghini.

Plus, the allure of the 911 shows no signs of slowing down when we've got a '91, '11, and '22 model all featuring in those leading sales. Just goes to show what an absolute timeless classic the 911 is.

No matter the year, no matter the auction site, Porsche's iconic rear-engined sports car keeps delivering the goods for sellers and drawing big money from enthusiasts. You'd struggle to find a more consistent and bankable model in the collector world.

2011 Porsche 997.2 GT3 RS $300,000

1991 Porsche 911 Turbo $281,000

2022 Porsche 911 Turbo S Coupe $280,000

2020 Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder $280,000

2006 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren $271,000

Here is some extra data we calculated that we think you’ll find useful.

SALE OF THE DAY - 1995 BMW M540i

I was just chatting with a fellow car enthusiast this afternoon (not sure if I have any friends that aren’t!) and he asked me if I saw the Hellrot BMW that sold today for a great price. I had not!! but you know I went straight to my computer to check it out & boy it did not disappoint.

#9 of 32 Produced, 6-Speed Manual, CARB Legal

Why This Car Stands Out

This isn't just any car—it's a unicorn in the BMW world. Number 9 out of only 32 ever made, this M540i is a special breed. BMW decided to go all out at the end of the E34 production run, creating this masterpiece that blends the power of a V8 with the finesse of the M5’s features. It's a mix you don't see every day, and it's why this car deserves the spotlight.

Exterior and Interior: The "Hellrot" red finish on this car is as bold as its performance. Only three of these were made in this color, making it a head-turner. The black interior, with its Bison leather upholstery and carbon fiber trim, screams luxury and sportiness all at once. It's the kind of car that makes you feel special just sitting in it.

Performance and Features: Now, let’s get to the heart of the matter—the 4.0L V8 engine that packs a punch with 282 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. And the cherry on top? A 6-speed manual transmission that lets you truly connect with the car. Plus, it's CARB certified, meaning it's one of the few that can legally roam the streets of California. This car isn’t just about good looks and power; it’s about delivering an unmatched driving experience.

Historical Value: This M540i has spent its life in Vancouver, a place known for treating cars kindly. Despite its 133,500 miles, it’s in remarkable condition, a testament to its meticulous care. The recent service history reads like a new car checklist—suspension components, control arms, radiator fan shroud, engine mounts, and much more. It's clear that no expense was spared in maintaining this gem.

The Auction Drama

This auction was nothing short of thrilling. With 32 bids and 130+ comments, it was clear that everyone wanted a piece of this action. The final hammer fell at $40,250—a price that speaks volumes about the car's value. But here's where it gets interesting: the second-highest bidder stopped at $40,000 and was visibly upset when the car sold for just $250 more. It’s a small detail, but it adds a touch of drama and showcases the fierce competition in these auctions. Big lesson, don’t stop bidding 😀

My Take

From my perspective, this sale is a standout for several reasons. The combination of rarity, immaculate condition, and performance makes this 1995 BMW M540i a dream car for any enthusiast. Its life in Vancouver, coupled with recent extensive maintenance, ensures it's ready for the road. The fact that it’s CARB certified and reviewed by Doug DeMuro only adds to its allure.

But beyond all the specs and history, what makes this car truly special is the passion it ignites in those who appreciate fine engineering and design.

This M540i isn’t just a vehicle; it's a statement. And for $40,250, the lucky new owner has acquired a legend at a great price.

2024 Tesla Cybertruck Foundation Series

It's been a few weeks since I last wrote about the CyberTrucks. They are now all over the country and as production ramps up, the prices of these are getting lower and lower. However, yesterday we saw the highest sale since right at the beginning of these sales with a sale price of $154k.

These are now usually going for around $120k. So what do I put this down to? Well, it was sold on SBX Cars who must have a more global audience, and maybe it was a foreign buyer who snagged it. Otherwise, if you're in the market for one, there are plenty available for at least $20k less.

So kudos to SBX for getting the price they did. If you want to try and buy one for maybe a bargain price, there are two no reserve auctions taking place right now here and here.

Weekend Sales

For those of you that have been reading The Daily Vroom for a while you know I’ve been banging on the drum of how fruitful a weekend sale can be. This weekend we have a big fish ready to find a new home, a 2008 Bugatti Veyron 16.4. The quad-turbo W16 makes just under 1,000 horsepower, which is obviously insane. But the real story is the advanced engineering and exotic materials used throughout.

We're talking a carbon fiber monocoque tub, aerospace aluminum and stainless steel, ceramic composite brakes with titanium calipers - a true no-expenses-spared build. This example is number 143 of 252 originally produced and just the 46th destined for the US market when new.

What's really interesting is the seller is 'akpcm' who is one of BaT's top power sellers. He just unloaded a 2018 Chiron for over $3 million last month, and now he's listing another Bugatti already. At this rate, maybe we can expect a new one from him every month going forward.

The condition looks exceptional with under 5,500 miles showing on the odometer. The black over tan leather color combo is classic and timeless. Surprisingly, the last Veyron like this that was listed back in 2021 failed to sell despite a $1.575 million high bid.

It's obviously an ultra-rare opportunity to get your hands on an engineering icon from Bugatti's modern era. The performance specs alone make it a total unicorn, not to mention the carbon construction and exotic materials. This one should certainly draw a lot of interest from serious collectors. The question is will it sell? And will we have another weekend bonanza? Here’s hoping…
