Yesterday’s Top Sales: Ford GT, Porsche 911s, and a Surprising Bargain

PLUS: 97 Ferrari F355 Spider Value Doubles 💰

The Daily Vroom

Good Morning Vroomers,

I usually don’t use the intro to the newsletter to promote any auctions. But I wanted to highlight this special auction as it’s the type of auction that gets me excited.

We're looking at a truly unique charity auction here, folks, and it's one for the books.

Caterham and the Royal Air Force have teamed up to create something extraordinary - a bespoke Caterham Seven 360R that pays homage to 50 years of the Puma HC2 helicopter. But this isn't just any custom job. We're talking about a car that's literally built with parts from an actual Puma HC2, registration XW232, that served in conflicts from Northern Ireland to Iraq.

The attention to detail here is mind-blowing. They've used aluminium skin sections from the helicopter for the bodywork, complete with original rivets and RAF insignia. The dashboard is a custom build matching the Puma's instrument panel, with repurposed military-grade gauges and switchgear. Talk about authentic!

What really sets this apart is the collaboration. This isn't just Caterham doing their thing - serving personnel at RAF Benson got their hands dirty in the build too. It's a true meeting of motorsport and military minds.

This isn't just about creating a cool car. This auction is all about giving back. The proceeds are going to Mission Motorsport and The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund, supporting injured service men and women. It's a perfect blend of honoring military heritage and supporting those who've served.

Running to September 12 this no reserve, no buyer's auction is a rare opportunity to own a piece of history while making a real difference. It's auctions like these that remind us of the power of our community to come together for a great cause. Well done Collecting Cars.

Hats off to Caterham and the RAF for putting this together. This is the kind of creativity and heart that keeps our hobby vibrant and meaningful. Can't wait to see where this one lands!

See you tomorrow,

Sam

MARKET LEADERBOARD

💰 The figures shared below don’t count any other sales such as car seats, memorabilia etc… All online auction sites are analyzed to put this leaderboard together.

I only include websites that have sold 5+ vehicles in the chart below.

Well, folks, I called it yesterday - sales are back with a vengeance, (just over $8.5m) and boy, did BaT deliver. I can't remember the last time I saw them crush it this hard in terms of pure sale numbers. They've pushed their auction end times later in the day, but it doesn't seem to have put a dent in their sell-through rate. Impressive stuff.

Meanwhile, over in Cars & Bids territory, they're holding steady like a rock. We're talking a consistent 20-25 vehicles sold daily. If BaT wasn't in the picture, these guys would be the undisputed kings of consistency.

But - and it's a big BUT - their auction listing numbers are stuck in neutral. I won't dive into the nitty-gritty right now (that's a whole other can of worms for another day), but they just can't seem to bump up those listing numbers. Don't get me wrong, pumping out 30 listings 5 days a week is no small feat. Hats off to them for keeping that pace. But when you've been parked at the same number for ages, and you've got a PE firm breathing down your neck hungry for growth, well, it's not exactly champagne and caviar time.

It's all about perspective, right? From the outside looking in, Cars & Bids is a slick operation that consistently delivers the goods. But if I were in the owner's shoes, staring at those flat growth numbers? I'd probably be seeing things differently.

Further food for thought. There are plenty of other platforms out there (you know the names) that would kill for the consistency Cars & Bids has achieved. But that's a whole other story for another time.

Above you'll find a breakdown of where yesterday's sales hit on the price spectrum. Here's the key thing to remember: generally speaking, if $100k+ sales make up over 10% of total sales, we're looking at an above average day.

You can also see this reflected in the average price, which came in at $46k. That's just above the roaming daily average sale price we typically see of $42k-$45k.

This kind of breakdown gives us a quick snapshot of market performance. When we see that $100k+ bracket punching above 10% and the average price creeping up, it's a good indicator that we're not just having a solid day, but one that's outperforming the norm.

It's these kinds of metrics that help us gauge the pulse of the market. They show us where the action is happening and give us insight into buyer behavior across different price points. In this case, it's pointing to strength not just in the high-end market, but a general uptick across the board.

YESTERDAY’S TOP 5 SALES

Want to dive deeper into any of these listings? Just click on the car to take you directly to the listing.

2005 Ford GT $455,000

2023 60-Mile Porsche 911 Sport Classic $390,000

2024 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Weissach Pack $343,000

1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Club Sport $310,000

2011 Porsche 911 Speedster $220,000

Yesterday's top 5 sales were really exciting to watch unfold. As I mentioned yesterday, the Club Sport was a personal favorite of mine, and the auction certainly didn't disappoint. The bidding went into a frenzy, resulting in a record high bid of $310,000 - what a blaze of glory!

All the cars caught my eye, but I really want to highlight the Speedster auction. The seller unfortunately had to sell the car due to a change in his health, but the lucky buyer got themselves a beautiful car at what I'd consider a very reasonable price of $220k. The last two 2011 Porsche 911 Speedsters that sold went for $275k and $317k, so this seems like a great value.

One interesting note is that the views for this Speedster listing were down compared to previous ones. Generally the Speedster auctions don't generate a ton of chatter, but maybe this one got a bit lost in the shuffle with all the other auctions happening.

Alumni Sales

Below are the top 5 Alumni sales yesterday. The arrows in the diagram below show whether the vehicle sale has gone down or up in value.

One of the most common questions I get asked on a daily basis is whether someone's car is worth more or less than they paid for it. For those of you who have been following along with us for a while, you know we sometimes share the daily Alumni sales to analyze if prices have gone up or down over time.

Looking at yesterday's top 5 sales, there's one real standout - the '97 Ferrari F355 Spider. This car has more than doubled in price since the previous auction back in 2019. We often see Porsches going up in value, but it's rare to see that kind of appreciation on an older Ferrari like this.

The seller would have taken $98k for this car, so getting $30k more than their own reserve price is a huge success for them. And I can understand why the buyer went all in - it's a six-speed manual, beautiful color inside and out, and it just drives so well. This is the kind of opportunity that doesn't come around too often.

A Hidden Gem in the World of Luxury Transportation

In the world of online auctions, true bargains are as elusive as unicorns. Unless you're a seasoned pro with a thousand tabs open, (am I the only one with so many tabs open?) constantly refreshing and tracking every listing, it's rare to stumble upon a genuine steal. But every so often, the stars align, and an opportunity emerges that makes even the most jaded buyers do a double-take.

Enter this 2008 Mercedes-Benz S550 limousine - a veritable treasure trove for the discerning limousine company, luxury transportation enthusiast, or high-powered executive looking to make a statement on the streets of Manhattan.

This 24-foot behemoth boasts a mere 25,000 miles and has been pampered like royalty. Garage-kept and sparingly used, it's not just a car - it's a time capsule of luxury. For the right buyer, this no-reserve auction presented an opportunity that typically only comes to those who live and breathe the auction platforms, constantly on the hunt for that perfect deal.

For executives navigating Manhattan's concrete jungle, this limousine offers more than transportation - it's a mobile office, sanctuary, and statement piece. Imagine gliding through bustling streets, ensconced in plush leather, with ambient lighting setting the mood for relaxation or last-minute meeting prep. Tinted windows provide privacy, while the advanced COMAND infotainment system keeps you connected.

The no-reserve auction format added intrigue, resulting in a winning bid of $47,500 - an absolute bargain in the world of luxury transportation. A new Mercedes-Benz S-Class starts over $100,000 before customization. This limousine, with its bespoke conversion by Empire Coach of Brooklyn, represents an investment likely exceeding $200,000 if purchased new today.

The winning bidder, new to the platform, zeroed in on this limo and emerged victorious - a classic tale of right place, right time, right buyer. It's the kind of serendipitous find that auction enthusiasts dream of, but rarely encounter without constant vigilance.
