POLL RESULTS

So a couple of days ago we covered the new feature from Cars & Bids which is an integrated inspection service for $199, carried out by Lemon Squad. You can read the full post here. We asked you what your thoughts were on this and below are the results.

I'm not really surprised at the results. As I said in the original post, it's a nice feature to have. But it's unlikely to move the needle to attract new bidders.

Now that being said, maybe this is not about attracting new bidders. It's not an increased revenue play as their charge of $199 is most likely just covering the cost of the inspection.

It could be, this is just me guessing that having an inspection report lessens the 'cost' of customer service as there are always (5%+) issues on the back-end of a deal with cars turning up to a buyer with issues that were not clear in the listing. Maybe this improves those complaints and charge-backs by 10%?

MIDDLE OF THE MARKET

A lot of what we cover in The Daily Vroom is the top end of the market. Not everyone (including me) can afford the crazy prices of a Bugatti. So today I want to highlight another side to the market, the bread and butter of all these platforms. The first vehicle I'm gonna be covering the Ford F-Series.

The History of the Ford F-Series

The Ford F-Series is a line of trucks produced by Ford Motor Company. It was introduced in 1948 and is currently in its fourteenth generation. The F-Series has been the best-selling vehicle in the United States since 1986 and the best-selling pickup truck since 1977.

Different Models of the Ford F-Series

  1. First Generation (1948-1952): Simple design with a flat grille and round headlights. Trucks had different weight capacities, from half-ton to three-ton.

  2. Second Generation (1953-1956): Modern design with wrap-around windshield and integrated headlights. "F-100" nameplate introduced and became most popular model.

  3. Third Generation (1957-1960): Streamlined design with a single headlight and new grille. "Styleside" bed introduced with smooth, flat-sided design.

  4. Fourth Generation (1961-1966): New design with squared-off appearance. "Twin I-Beam" front suspension introduced, which improved handling and ride comfort.

  5. Fifth Generation (1967-1972): New design with wider cab and "Ranger" trim package. "Camper Special" package introduced for heavy-duty towing and hauling.

  6. Sixth Generation (1973-1979): More modern design with larger grille and square headlights. "SuperCab" model introduced with larger cab and rear-hinged doors.

  7. Seventh Generation (1980-1986): New design with improved aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. "XL" and "XLT" trim packages introduced.

  8. Eighth Generation (1987-1991): More aerodynamic design with sloped hood and rounded front fenders. "Flareside" bed introduced with step-side design.

  9. Ninth Generation (1992-1996): More rounded design with new grille and improved aerodynamics. "PowerStroke" diesel engine introduced for heavy-duty towing and hauling.

  10. Tenth Generation (1997-2003): New design with more aggressive appearance and "SuperCrew" model with four full-sized doors. "Harley-Davidson" trim package introduced.

  11. Eleventh Generation (2004-2008): New design with more angular appearance and larger grille. "King Ranch" trim package introduced with premium leather upholstery and woodgrain trim.

  12. Twelfth Generation (2009-2014): New design with more refined appearance and improved fuel efficiency. "EcoBoost" engine introduced for improved performance and fuel economy.

  13. Thirteenth Generation (2015-2020): New design with more aluminum-intensive construction for improved performance and fuel efficiency.

  14. Fourteenth Generation (2021-Present): New design with improved technology and capability. Hybrid powertrain option and a 10-speed automatic transmission. Redesigned interior with a larger touchscreen display, workspace options, and Pro Power Onboard. All-electric version of the F-150 called the Ford Lightning is introduced.

Let's be clear this isn't your average sold vehicle on BaT or Cars & Bids, certainly not on the U.K. websites. What this is, is a representation of the types of vehicles these sites sell on a daily basis. I'll be covering many model and makes as we move forward. Today I chose the F-series due to it's huge popularity here in the U.S.

The stats: 100+ have been sold in 2023 across mainly the U.S. platforms such as Hemmings, BaT, Clasiq, Autohunter & Cars & Bids.

The average selling price in 2023 is $31,480.
