LAST WEEK'S ONLINE AUCTION RESULTS

Last week's auction returned with a bang!πŸ’₯ We witnessed a higher volume of cars sold compared to previous weeks (see below), along with higher-priced sales. The top 10 most expensive cars, as shown below, totalled $700,000 more than the previous week.

While the week before saw four companies dominating the top 10 sales, last week there were only two: Bring a Trailer & Collecting Cars.

Delving further into the data, only one other company, Pcarmarket, sold three cars among the top 50 highest-priced vehicles.

Top Selling Cars Sold Last Week

ANALYSING THE COMPETITORS

To better understand the data, I analysed companies that sold 50 or more cars last week. Here is the breakdown:

Car & Classic

Car & Classic, based in the UK, consistently sell a fair number of cars, predominantly in the mid-to-lower value range. Their highest sale was just over $100,000, while most of their other top sellers were in the $20,000 range. How this translates to revenue generated is a story for another day.

Bring A Trailer

Bring A Trailer smoked the competition yet again with the HUGE volume of sales and also the high value of vehicles they sold last week.

As I mentioned in a previous newsletter their top sale for the 2012 Lexus LFA of $775,000 was in my opinion a steal! The fact that their cheapest top 10 sale was more expensive than two of their four competitors I'm analysing speaks volumes.

Collecting Cars

Collecting Cars consistently sells high-value vehicles.

In fact, they sold two of the four McLarens sold last week, with BaT selling the other two. For a more detailed analysis of their strong and weak points, see below.

Cars & Bids

Cars & Bids sold a significant number of cars compared to the rest of the market (aside from BaT), at least last week.

However, they struggle to consistently sell higher-priced vehicles. Every so often, they have a high sale, but as seen in last week's numbers below, they only sold one car over $100,000. Keep in mind, this is a company that received a substantial buyout at the beginning of the year, so I'm expecting big changes!

Top Makes Of Cars Sold Last Week

I often see Ferraris, McLarens, and Porsches among the top 10 most expensive sales of the day or week. But how many of those cars are sold over a weekly period?

Wonder no longer! I've conducted the analysis for you, and below you can find the top 5 makes of cars that were sold last week. My hunch was that Porsche would be the top seller, and for once, I was right πŸ₯³.

Who Sold What

Porsche - 53% of all were sold on BaT. Pcarmarket, the β€˜Porsche’ website came 4 in Porsches sold after Collecting Cars who were 2nd highest sellers and 3rd highest were Cars & Bids.

Mercedes-Benz - Exactly 50% of Mercedes-Benz were sold on BaT. Next highest were Cars & Bids who sold 24% of the total amount following equally by Catiwiki & Collecting Cars.

Ford - No-one came close to BaT when selling Fords as they dominated the sales with over 85% of sales.

BMW - 60% of BMW sales came from BaT, with Cars & Bids 2nd at 22% and everyone else managing less than 5 sales each.

Chevrolet - sales were 70% from BaT. 2nd highest number of sales and possibly their first mention in the Daily Vroom it’s Autohunter, with 11% of the total sales.

COMPARING SALES

Here's the table you've all been waiting for. Who sold how many cars last week.

As mentioned above, this table only shows companies that have sold 50 or more vehicles last week. The top 4 consist of two U.K. companies and two U.S. companies. Is that a trend we'll continue to see?

Well it's no surprise to anyone that BaT are first in the list with a huge 480 vehicles sold last week. I believe they are one of the only companies that auction vehicles over the weekend, (something for others to think about).

My hunch that Pcarmarket would have sold more than 50 was way off!! They sold just 15 cars last week.

Taking BaT off the table for a minute. The other three 'competitors' all have their strengths and weaknesses in terms of pure numbers.

Operations, strategy, marketing etc.. are not part of today's analysis.

So here's my very basic take on their strengths and weaknesses based on solely on the data.

Collecting Cars

Strengths - consistently selling high value value vehicles, no-one aside BaT can get close to their numbers.

Weaknesses - they just don't sell enough!

Do they need to come to the U.S.? (post for another day).

Cars & Bids

Strengths - consistently selling 20 cars per day

Weaknesses - struggling to sell higher priced vehicles

Car & Classic

Strengths - they dominate the lower dollar amount sales in U.K. & Europe

Weaknesses - majority of cars sold were below $20,000

That's it for today..
