๐Ÿฉธ MARKET MELTDOWN - numbers nosedive ๐Ÿ“‰

The Daily Vroom

Good morning Vroomers,

I didnโ€™t see that coming! Monday was a bloodbath (kind of) in the online auction world.

If youโ€™re reading this and youโ€™re in any way connected to any of the platforms I mention below, please donโ€™t shoot the messenger. Iโ€™m reacting to what Iโ€™ve seen in the market on Monday.

Itโ€™s not ALL bad as plenty of cars were sold, as youโ€™ll read below.

Lets get straight into itโ€ฆ

MARKET MELTDOWN

If you've been following my newsletters, you know I'm all about keeping it real. I'm not shy about sharing my thoughts, be they bouquets or brickbats, about any of the websites. I call it like I see it.

The figures I'm about to share might just be the most dismal sell-through rates I've come across since I started playing detective with the numbers.

As I've mentioned in past newsletters, not all websites are keen on airing their dirty laundry. They're more than happy to trumpet their successes, but when it comes to the cars they couldn't sell, they suddenly turn into a secret society. It's like they've hidden the true numbers in a maze, and only the most dedicated can find them.

Lucky for you, I'm not your average Joe ๐Ÿ˜‰ (just ask my wife, she'll vouch for my 'uniqueness' ๐Ÿคช). I've got my secret ways of uncovering the real sell-through rate numbers. Now, keep in mind these sales happened on Monday, and as I mentioned yesterday, 1-5% of them might not actually go through - but they were sold at auction, so they're making the stats.

I've been on a virtual tour of every website that auctions cars online. Very few of them listed more than 10 cars yesterday. So, you won't see results for the likes of MBMarket, PCarMarket, Autohunter, Clasiq, Hemmings, Marqued, Hagerty, etc. But rest assured, I've had my magnifying glass on all these websites.

With that said, let's dive into the results from yesterday's auctions.

At first glance, you might think, "Hey, those numbers aren't half bad!" But let me tell you, as someone who's been tracking these figures like a hawk, these numbers are a bit like seeing a three-legged cat at a dog show. They're considerably lower than the sell-through rate we usually see on a regular day, which typically hovers anywhere from 75%-90% for most of the platforms mentioned above.

But hey, life isn't just black and white, and neither are these numbers. So, before we dive into the nitty-gritty of the sales and non-sales, let's put on our detective hats and dig a little deeper into these underlying numbers. Ready? Let's go!

With BaT & Cars & Bids listing the most cars, I wanted to analyse if what Iโ€™m seeing in the numbers equates to actual sale numbers.

Interestingly if you remember from last week, I posted here some news that Cars & Bids had a record breaking day which was the 5th June, with a 90% sell through rate, impressive.

Now looking through a different lens, we can see that although a 90% STR is VERY impressive, in reality the total $ of sales & average sale price was down from the previous week and was again down yesterday.

The same goes for BaT, with a much sharper decline in both total $ of sales and average price.

So, what's the scoop, Vroomers? Are we witnessing a grand plunge in the market? How does this jive with the chart I sent in yesterday's newsletter, which showed record-breaking numbers last week for the ten most expensive cars sold?

Well, let's not jump the gun here. It's a bit early to be making any bold predictions about where the market is headed. Today's sales and the rest of the week could turn out to be a veritable bonanza. There are a TON of listings ending this week.

Just to give you a taste, BaT has well over 100 listings ending today, Collecting Cars has 40, Cars & Bids 29, and there are many, many more across a variety of sites. We could be looking at a record-breaking selling day ๐Ÿ”ฅ.

But don't worry, you won't have to navigate this wild ride alone. I'll be right here, crunching the numbers, and keeping you in the loop about what's selling, what's gathering dust, and who's making waves in the selling game.

NEARLY SALES

๐ŸŽ 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe X50 6-Speed

๐Ÿ’ฐ Final Bid $67,496

Exterior ๐Ÿš—: The 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe X50 6-Speed is a sight to behold with its Carrara White finish. It's equipped with a sunroof, xenon headlights, and integrated fog lights for enhanced visibility. The car also sports a Rennkit rear spoiler extension, adding a touch of sportiness to its overall appearance.

Interior ๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ: Step inside and you'll be greeted by a luxurious black leather interior. The car comes with automatic climate control for optimal comfort and a Bose sound system for high-quality audio. A Numeric short-throw shifter has been installed, providing a more engaging driving experience.

Performance ๐ŸŽ๏ธ: Under the hood, the car is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.6L Mezger flat-six engine paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. It boasts several modifications including Fabspeed headers, a Speedtech exhaust system, and Bilstein dampers, enhancing its performance on the road.

Why It Didn't Sell โ“: The most simple answer is that the adjustment of the market from a year ago. Are sellers and platforms being unrealistic with their reserve prices? which is less than the highest bid. This could be a potential reason why the car didn't sell. Additionally, the car has undergone quite a few modifications, which might not appeal to all potential buyers. Some buyers prefer a more original or classic configuration, and these modifications could have deterred those buyers

๐Ÿš— 1995 Toyota Supra Turbo

Final Bid: $37,600

I thought this would be a surefire hit, but surprisingly, it didn't sell. It's a 1995 Toyota Supra Turbo, a real beauty, and a classic in the world of Japanese sports cars. And Iโ€™m a HUGE Supra fan.

๐Ÿ” The Car's Details ๐Ÿ”

This Supra is a right-hand drive, Japanese-spec coupe, finished in Alpine Silver Metallic. It's currently titled in South Carolina and was reportedly imported in February 2023. It has a very low mileage of about 18,500 miles.

Under the hood, it boasts the famous 2JZ-GTE 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged straight-6 engine, rated at 276 horsepower and 318 lb-ft of torque. The power is sent to the rear wheels via a 4-speed automatic transmission.

๐ŸŒŸ Exterior Highlights ๐ŸŒŸ

The car's exterior is a sight to behold, with its Alpine Silver Metallic finish giving it a sleek and stylish look. It also features some cool modifications like 17-inch BBS RGII wheels. However, there are some paint chips, scratches, and blemishes around the exterior, hazy headlight lenses, and scratches on the wheels. There's also some corrosion on underbody components.

๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ Interior Highlights ๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ

Inside, the car is equipped with a metric instrument cluster, a rear wiper, cloth and leather upholstery, power-adjustable front sport seats, and air conditioning. It also has a MOMO Corse steering wheel, a Carrozzeria head unit, and a trunk-mounted Carrozzeria amplifier and CD changer. However, there are creases on the driver's seat and scuffs on interior trim panels and touch points.

โ“ Why Didn't It Sell? โ“

I believe the main reason could be the car's known flaws. While the car is a classic and has low mileage, the cosmetic issues and underbody corrosion might have deterred potential buyers who were looking for a car in pristine condition. Or just maybe the Supra market is cooling โ„๏ธ
